Intimate Affair: The Lingerie Alliance Sponsors Lingerie Pillow Fight Party with Social Exposure Media

On June 26th, 2013 at XVI Rooftop Lounge, Social Exposure will produce a 300 person lingerie pillow fight party with cocktails sponsored by Hammer + Sickle Vodka, featuring lingerie by Rouge Seduire and in collaboration with The Lingerie Alliance.

Invited guests MUST attend in lingerie or sleepwear to keep the theme (and photos, of course) consistent.  Men and women are encouraged to bring their own pillows and at the height of the night, the pillow bashing begins with an unexpected explosion of feathers, glitter and absolute (tasteful) mayhem!

The purpose of this event is not only to fulfill every mans dream (LOL), but to encourage creative, outside-the-box interaction by forcing active networking and activity that you don’t normally get to participate in. Yes, these events have a seductive side, but the main purpose is to spread a positive message of body awareness and sensuality where oftentimes in a metropolis such as New York, social pressures can take a toll on the healthy mind.

This is it!  The week we have been waiting for… Buyers, brands, media, press, and other intimate apparel professionals kicked off the week in Las Vegas for the bi-annual Curve NV lingerie trade show.  This season’s edition was held at The Venetian in Las Vegas.  By the end of the week, everyone will converge in New York City for the Curve NY show at Jacob Javits from February 24th through the 26th as well as The Lingerie Collective trade show and the world’s first fashion week dedicated to the intimate apparel industry, LingerieFW™.

LFWIntroducing LingerieFW™: the first Fashion Week dedicated exclusively to the intimate apparel industry.  Lingerie Fashion Week will make its debut coinciding with the industry’s tradeshows, showcasing FW13 collections on Friday February 22nd & Saturday the 23rd at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City.  Six brands will show collections at LingerieFW™ this season: global powerhouse Affinitas & Parfait, luxuriously erotic FYI by Dani Read, unconventional NaïS, sultry Nevaeh Intimates, provocative Rouge Séduire and effortless Uye Surana.

The winter weather has arrived!  It has been incredibly brisk here in New York.  And I understand there was a bit of snow in Paris during the 50th Anniversary edition of Salon International de la Lingerie as well.  Despite the delayed flights and mucky city streets, I bet the flurries inspired a certain romanticism. 

Salon de la Paris_ICE imageI can only imagine the Paris city lights twinkling through a nighttime snow fall… It seems apropos that the theme of the renowned show’s trend forum was “Ice Land” which featured four “universes” — Romantic, Innovation, Savage and Neo Nude.  I first saw this emerging trend last year at a preview of the Marlies Dekkers Winter 2012 “Ice Queen” – Cool Scandinavia collection.  At first glance, I fell in love with the icy, frosted, muted hues which were presented in delicate snowflake-inspired laces and embroideries adorned with crystal embellishments.  The colors are quite a departure from the more traditional lingerie colors- black, nude, pink and red.

Happy New Year!  For me, the New Year is a great time for reflection.  Many years ago I started a habit of keeping a journal.  I am not one to write in it daily; but I make it a point to pull it out in the first part of January to write out my accomplishments from the previous year and to list out my goals, hopes, dreams and initiatives for the coming year (both personal and professional.)  It’s fascinating to look at what was written the previous January.  Most of the time, I forget what I wrote!  Usually, the goals that were set have been accomplished (in some shape or form.)  And more often than not, the outcome is far better than I could have imagined!  So before I get you up to speed on the upcoming “Intimate Affairs,” I’d like to reflect back on 2012.

Dear Kate Ms MoxieIn 2012, we saw the launch of several new independent brands including Angela Friedman, Nevaeh Intimates, Fleur du Mal, Cheeki brand and Rouge Séduire among others.  Julie Sygiel re-launched the revolutionary, absorbent, leak-proof and stain-resistant underthings now known as Dear Kate.  And the Empowered By You panty was launched which enables underprivileged women to spearhead their own businesses. 

The lingerie blogosphere expanded to include new bloggers and other independent intimate apparel professionals including my personal new fave, Caro the Lingerie Lesbian!

In ecommerce retailing, we saw new methods of marketing and selling intimates from sites including True & Co., IntiMint, AdoreMe.com and Ampere.  Ecom retailers are offering lingerie subscription services and other innovative methods of retailing. 

I witnessed an increased awareness of the importance of a proper fit. There were numerous online “debates” regarding the best way to fit, vanity sizing and so on.  More and more brands, manufacturers and retailers are paying closer attention to the needs specific to the full-figure and full-busted consumer.  Early last year, Bare Necessities launched their sister site, Bare Plus, which is an online shopping environment dedicated to this consumer.

Freshpair Pic 1Several e-tailers made an attempt to answer the question of how to get a proper fit when purchasing online.  HerRoom.com launched the proprietary “Know your Breasts Bra Finder” questionnaire which purports to help you discover your best bra styles.  And Freshpair.com re-launched their website which now includes more personalized services such as an At-Home Bra Fit Service and a Men’s Underwear Club.  Freshpair also celebrated the 10th Anniversary of National Underwear Day by hosting a one-of-a-kind “It’s Time for a Change” pop-up store experience in New York City in August.

LingerieAlliance_horizontal logoIn August of 2012, my partner Luis Paredes, publisher of The Lingerie Journal (and The Business of Pleasure,) and I launched the online collaborative community of intimate apparel professionals known as The Lingerie Alliance.  The Lingerie Alliance was inspired by the Brand Affair Marketing and PR Panel Discussion we hosted during February Market 2012.  The Brand Affair proved to us that there is a need for a collaborative community of lingerie professionals as well as education, information and resources.  Throughout the year, we sponsored several events including NOLCHA Fashion Week’s Closing Party and the non-profit fundraisers PinkChoseMe’s BRA Day USA 2012 and Go Naked and Check Yourself.  We ended the year with a fun “Festive Affair” Holiday Networking Social which represented our vision for The Lingerie Alliance.  The coming year will bring more events, workshops and seminars tailored specifically for today’s intimate apparel professional and we hope to have the membership functionality for the site itself completed before Summer.

LingerieFW_imageLauren Rich of RICHPR announced that she will be launching LingerieFW in New York City in February 2013.  LingerieFW will be the first fashion week dedicated to intimate apparel brands.

In late October, the northeast suffered the wrath of Hurricane Sandy which delayed the quarterly wholesale market week and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses including my friend Marla Wink’s lingerie store, Indian Summer, in Beach Haven, Long Beach Island, New Jersey.  (I’m happy to report that Marla is as determined as ever to rebuild her store and is hopeful that she will re-open her doors in time for the busy Summer selling season down the shore.)

The Lingerie Collective is coming to New York City in February 2013!  The boutique trade show is well-known in London for featuring British and international emerging brands with a focus on innovation and luxury.

Jene Luciani and Moira Nelson_2012 HUG Awards GalaThe non-profit Underfashion Club and the Intimate Apparel Square Club continued their programs in 2012 including the FEMMY Gala last February, the H.U.G. Awards Gala in November, various other programs throughout the year and their annual Holiday parties in December.  Both organizations make significant contributions to our industry and raise funds to support their respective causes.

Other charity events included Go Naked and Check Yourself which was hosted in part by Sweetest Sin Boutique in Red Bank, New Jersey and included sponsors LELO and The Lingerie Alliance.

Overall, 2012 was a year full of growth and advancements.  I am motivated by the forward movement in our industry and look forward to seeing further progress throughout 2013.  I wish all of you the best of health, happiness, a sense of well-being, success and prosperity in your professional lives and in your personal endeavors.

It’s a very busy time of the year full of holiday shopping, long work hours, year-end meetings, goal-setting for 2013, dinners, parties and other events.  And I’m full of anxiety… attempting to accomplish everything I set out to do before the year is over.  Am I the only one that’s feeling the pressure?  Any good tips for maintaining a sense of balance during this time of the year?  I’m getting enough sleep; I’m sticking with my usual meditation routine, allowing time for myself and making self-care a priority… Yet I still feel a bit overwhelmed.  Please share your advice for coping with life’s ups and downs…  I’d love to hear what you do to stay sane.

Victor Vega_Sophia and Gabrielle_Bob VitaleThe Grand Prize went to Joseph Lara from Delta Galil.  He won a ticket to the 2013 Femmy Gala which is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Cipriani 42nd Street, NYC.  The 2nd Prize went to Sophia Gergatsoulis and Gabrielle Bizzoco from Wacoal America.  Sophia and Gabrielle each received a 1-year membership in the Underfashion Club for their creative entry in the contest.  In addition to the festivities, the UFC never forgets to take care of its own community…..gifts of clothing and toys were collected and donated to the New York Foundling Children.  Club president Walter Costello and other members of the Club and industry pros including Debby Long-Gedney, Roslyn Harte, Lance Whitaker, Gary Hughes, Victor Vega, Bob Vitale, Julia Burns, Steve Chernoff, Justin Chernoff, Suzanne Beck, Luis Paredes, Joel Fertel, Ellen Lewis, and many others came together to celebrate the season in style.

Dear Kate Launch PartyThe official Dear Kate Launch Party was held on Friday, December 7th.  The Intimate Affair was hosted by Azaleas at 140 Second Avenue, NYC.  Family, friends and fans of the innovative brand came together to celebrate the launch of this unique lingerie line.  Azaleas was standing-room only.  Congrats Julie and thanks for the Dear Kate logo tote!

Bra La Mode hosted a Festive Affair Holiday Trunk Show on Saturday, December 8th.  The Intimate Affair featured Dirty Dolls Lingerie, Love & Dream Sleepwear and Loungewear and introduced – for the first time ever – the luxury lingerie line, Rouge Séduire.  The event was held at the neighborhood spa, Spa 34 on 34th Street in NYC.  Guests enjoyed Mani/Pedis and admired the three independent lines being showcased at the event.

On December 4, 2012, The Underfashion Club hosted its annual Holiday Party at The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park South.  The Intimate Affair featured dinner, dancing and a whimsical bra & bottoms design contest.  In addition, gifts of clothing and toys were collected and donated to the New York Foundling Children.  Members of the Club and other industry professionals came together to celebrate the season in style.  Stay tuned for pictures of the event and the list of design contest winners.

The Holiday shopping season is officially underway….Thanksgiving is behind us, Black Friday sales began earlier than ever (many retailers held pre-Thanksgiving Day sales on Wednesday,) online sales on Black Friday topped the $1 Billion mark for the first time ever and the busiest shopping weekend of the season was capped by Cyber Monday specials.  Did you score any exceptional steals?  How do you navigate through the sea of sales?  Do you stick with your favorite retailers or did you venture outside of your comfort zone?  Personally, I avoid shopping on Black Friday.  I’m famous for waiting til the last minute… Oftentimes shopping on Christmas Eve!  How many of you shop for yourselves this time of year?  Or do you stick to your Christmas list with a fierce determination to stay within your budget?  Most importantly… How many of you purchased lingerie this past weekend??? 

When is lingerie an appropriate gift?  I recently helped a friend shop for a Bachelorette Party gift….  I took her to La Petite Coquette on University Place, NYC.  Rather than simply purchasing one piece, we put together a “basket” of assorted items including the Hanky Panky Signature Lace Keyhole Teddy in black, Booty Parlor’s Good Girl Bad Girl Feather Whipper, a sexy sleep mask among other things.  What fun we had!  And I was told that this gift was the highlight of the Bachelorette Party.

Can you believe it’s almost Thanksgiving?  I have so much to be grateful for this year…  I don’t even know where to begin.  Without getting too sentimental, I would just like to say that it has been overwhelming, humbling and inspiring to watch my businesses grow.  And I have you all to thank for this!  Without you, my family, friends, fans, followers and supporters, I would not have been able to plow forward through the tough times (when I was literally working 18+ hours a day.)  I’ve learned to simply put one foot in front of the other… Planting lots of little seeds along the way.  The rewards have been priceless.  I am very blessed.  What do you have to be thankful for this year?

The Intimate Affair, GO NAKED AND CHECK YOURSELF, was held on November 18th at Teak Restaurant, Red Bank, New Jersey.  The annual event is a fundraising affair dedicated to bringing awareness / prevention to detectible cancers where you can go naked and check yourself – skin, breast and testicular cancers.  The event was presented by Sugarush (a specialty bakery in Red Bank, NJ) and the award-winning lingerie boutique, Sweetest Sin

The mission of Go Naked and Check Yourself is to take the stigma of embarrassment out of checking yourself, because early detection can prevent long term issues.  All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit The American Cancer Society, Livestrong, Young Survival Coalition and Move for Hunger.  This year’s event raised over $10,000 for these non-profit organizations.  The event was sponsored in part by The Lingerie Alliance and leading designer brand for intimate lifestyle products, LELO.
