Hey there Lingerie Lovers!  I think I’ve finally recovered from my trip to Los Angeles.  It was a whirlwind trip, but very productive.  So it was well worth it…. And I got to hang out with boob and bra expert Elisabeth Dale!  Ya can’t beat that, right?  But you know me… I was back in the saddle as soon as I returned to New York.  And there’s a lot going on in the intimates biz.  Here are a few highlights….

The Underfashion Club has announced the 2013 FEMMY Award Honorees .  Awards will be presented to Bloomingdale’s, Cosabella and Lenzing Fibers; the Innovation Award will go to Hautelook.com and Josie Natori, founder and CEO of The Natori Company will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Intimate Affair is being held on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Cipriani on 42nd Street and is being hosted by funny guy Carson Kressley.  The theme of the 2013 Student Design Contest is “Midnight Garden” – Seduction of Flowers.  For further details, visit www.underfashionclub.org.

The breast cancer awareness organization PinkChoseMe Foundation is hosting BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AWARENESS (BRA) Day USA 2012, an awareness and fundraising celebration today, Wednesday, October 17th, 2012.  The event is sponsored by the Breast and Plastic Surgeons at the Weill Cornell Breast Center in NYC.  This unique awareness and fundraising Intimate Affair is also sponsored in part by The Lingerie Alliance.  The event is being held at the upscale Martin Lawrence Gallery in New York’s famed downtown neighborhood, SoHo.  RSVP at www.pinkchoseme.eventbrite.com.

The Intimate Apparel Square Club’s 57th Annual H.U.G. Award Gala is less than a month away.  This year’s Intimate Affair (called “An Enchanted Evening”) honors LuAnn Via, President and CEO of Payless ShoeSource, Inc., as well as Steven Chernoff, chairman of Rago Foundations, LLC and Janet Peters will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to the Club.  The annual event raises funds to support NYU Langone Medical Center’s RUSK Institute and Tisch Hospital.  Join us on Wednesday, November 7th at 230 Fifth Penthouse to celebrate the humanitarian achievements of our honorees and to support the “RUSK Kids.”  Also note, the Club is seeking contributions of merchandise and/or services to include in the SILENT AUCTION, which provides additional and much needed financial support for the Rusk/Tisch Kids.  If you have (or someone you know has,) an item or two that you would like to donate for the auction, please get in touch with me ASAP.

The Lingerie Alliance is proud to be participating in another fundraiser on November 18th at Teak Restaurant, in Red Bank, New Jersey.  The Intimate Affair, GO NAKED AND CHECK YOURSELF, is an evening dedicated to bringing awareness / prevention to detectible cancers where you can go naked and check yourself – skin, breast and testicular cancers.  The event is presented by Sugarush (a specialty bakery in Red Bank, NJ) and the award-winning lingerie boutique, Sweetest Sin.  The mission of Go Naked and Check Yourself is to take the stigma of embarrassment out of checking yourself, because early detection can prevent long term issues.  All proceeds from the event benefit charities such as The American Cancer Society.

Got any big plans for the coming Memorial Day Weekend?  My focus is on Swimwear rather than Intimate Apparel this week…  As long as this rainy, wet weather blows through before the weekend.  Fingers crossed for sunny skies!  I can’t wait to pull out the bra-sized Fantasie brand bikini top and matching high-waisted bikini bottom I picked up at La Petite Coquette here in the City earlier this season. 

Here are a few Intimate Insights for the Week….

On Wednesday, May 16th, Hanky Panky and Sanrio hosted a party to celebrate the launch of the Hello Kitty for Hanky Panky collection.  The “invite only” Intimate Affair was held at Studio 450 in midtown Manhattan and featured special guest Hello Kitty, a flipbook photo booth, and Sephora Hello Kitty Beauty Express Services for make-up and fragrance.  The venue provided a spectacular view of the City as the sun set to the west.  The DJ was spinning great tunes & guests enjoyed signature Hanky Panky for Hello Kitty cocktails and Hello Kitty cupcakes.  The event was playful and fun and there was a lot of “hot pink” everywhere you looked…  Even Hanky Panky’s Glam Guru, J.D. Breen, colored his hair hot pink to commemorate the collaboration with Hello Kitty!  The event was held in support of The Humane Society of the United States. 

On Thursday, May 17th, reality star and entrepreneur extraordinaire Bethenny Frankel celebrated the launch of Skinnygirl Solutions at select Macy’s stores nationwide.  The Intimate Affair was held at the R Lounge in NYC’s Times Square.  Bethenny created the shapewear brand, Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers, for every woman & every body.  The shapewear brand differentiates itself from other brands by featuring “shapewear that’s meant to be seen.”  Bethenny spoke frankly about the line saying,It’s lazy lingerie; you’re wearing it now, and if you take your clothes off, you’re already sexy for your husband or your boyfriend or for a date.”  Pop into your local Macy’s store to check out the lingerie-inspired Skinnygirl shapewear that’s meant to be seen.  *Disclaimer- in case you didn’t know, I spend my days representing Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers for Bethenny.  Now get your buns to Macy’s & buy some!

CLO Intimo hosted Spring Champagne & Strawberries, Soiree and Sample Sale last Thursday at the Penthouse at Archstone Murray Hill, NYC.  The Sample Sale included designer jewelry by local artist Geri Roucaute’s line, Poupette.  And, high-end sexy accessories brand LELO hosted a multi-brand Sample Sale last week including luxury lingerie brand Jenna Leigh.  Guests snagged pleasure accessories and sexy intimate apparel up to 70% off!

I am co-hosting an Intimate Affair with the US distribution company, Revival Brands, on Tuesday June 5th.  The “invite only” event will feature luxury, Italian hosiery brand Philippe Matignon.  Well-known all over Europe, Philippe Matignon’s high-end hosiery was just introduced to the States last year….  We will be previewing their Fall/Winter 2012 collection.  This exclusive industry event is sure to have you falling for this seasons legwear trends!

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 19th, 2012.  The Intimate Apparel Square Club (IASC) is hosting a “H.U.G. Social Event” to raise awareness of the Club’s mission, to raise funds to support the pediatric rehabilitation center at NYU Medical Center’s RUSK Institute and to attract new members to the Club.  The event will be held at Legends Lounge on 33rd Street in NYC and will feature an open bar and light hors d’oeuvres.  Invitations will be sent out in early June.  To learn more about the Club, go to www.thehugaward.org.

Attention Lingerie Designers!  The next edition of the Lingerie Journal Designer Showcase is opening its doors this summer.  They had an incredibly successful show this past February with 10 independent designers showing their lines and a sold out Brand Affair Seminar and Lingerie Exhibition that drew in close to 200 guests including buyers, lingerie retail store owners, independent lingerie designers, wholesale manufacturers, influential lingerie bloggers, and other intimate apparel professionals.  Designers interested in exhibiting at this summer’s show should contact info@lingeriedesignershowcase.com to request an application. Bare Necessities Launches BarePlus for Curvy Girls Just Like Us!

Today, everyone in the Intimate Apparel industry is familiar with BareNecessities.com.  But I grew up with them.  The company was around long before they were a dot com.  Initially, Bare Necessities was a well established family-run, brick-and-mortar retailer with a few boutiques in central New Jersey.  I remember them as the intimate apparel store you visited if you needed specialty intimate apparel that couldn’t be found at my local Sears or at the Monmouth Mall.  My Mom took me to one of their shops for a strapless/backless bustier to wear to my junior prom.  Of course, that was ages ago…. (But I think I still have that fiber-fill “contraption” tucked away in a box along with the prom dress.)  Since launching as BareNecessities.com in 1998, they have emerged as the number one multi-brand online lingerie retailer.  And for good reason… they have always been ‘ahead of the curve.’ 

As a champion of curvy girls, I am pleased to announce that Bare Necessities launched a new online boutique designed specifically for curvy women called BarePlus by Bare Necessities.  And, I am honored to say that I was invited to attend their press conference at the Warwick Hotel in midtown Manhattan this afternoon where I received the news firsthand alongside fellow intimate apparel industry professionals, influential bloggers, publicists, media and press.  The theme of the event was “inclusion” for E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E.

The announcement regarding BarePlus came along with news of a Curvy Fashion Show to be hitting Fashion Week in September 2012.  Jeff Grinstein, CEO of Jeff Grinstein Entertainment which is responsible for the Curvy Fashion Show, stated that the new fashion show will be a high-end couture show that is dedicated to serving the full-figure woman and that it will change Fashion Week forever.

BarePlus by Bare Necessities will feature more than 500 bras that fit sizes 38A – 56J, including everyday bras, sports bras, and sexy bra and panty sets.  The website, www.bareplus.com, will offer more than 1,000 styles of plus size lingerie, hosiery and swimwear, from 81 brands including Elomi, SPANX, Bali, Wacoal, Hanky Panky and Calvin Klein.

“The launch of BarePlus reinforces our commitment to serving the woman with curves,” said Jay Dunn, Chief Marketing Officer for Bare Necessities.  “The launch marks the beginning of our effort to build the best shopping experience for curvy women.  Over the next several months, you’ll see more features, photography representative of our customer, and exciting new products from the world’s best brands that you won’t find anywhere else.”

BarePlus marks the first major effort executed by Dunn since joining Bare Necessities in 2011 as its first Chief Marketing Officer.  Dunn came from Lane Bryant, where he had been the mastermind behind the landmark “Red Bra” ad campaign.  The advertisement, which ran on American Idol, featured a plus size model flaunting a sexy red bra and panty set and became a national sensation after it was initially banned by both ABC and Fox for showing too much cleavage. The controversy ignited a national debate regarding how curvy women are portrayed in the media.

Having worked in the intimate apparel industry for over a decade, I can say with confidence that BarePlus will be a true success.  And, as a curvy consumer, I know that there is certainly a demand for an intimate apparel site dedicated to serving the plus size woman.
