Rouge Seduire_Mimi SetWe’re halfway through January… Can you believe it?  That means Valentine’s Day is just a month away!  I think of Valentine’s Day as the Super Bowl of the Intimate Apparel industry.  I can’t think of any other Holiday that almost requires a lingerie purchase, can you? 

I’d love to hear your innovative merchandising strategies for increasing sales between now and February 14th.  Are you having a sale? Offering a Gift-with-Purchase? An in-store event?  Last year, Margo Andros of The Pink Slip in NYC’s Grand Central Station marketed a “Dear John” campaign which targeted the men that frequent her store.  She sent out a hand-written note to her best male clientele.  Margo recognizes the fact that men appreciate convenience and ease of purchase (especially when it comes to buying underthings for their loved ones!)  So she offered three Ready-To-Give “Packages” to remove the guesswork for the fellas, including optional delivery / messenger service.  It was genius, and proved to be a real success.  What do you have up your sleeve?  If you are planning something special, please let me know.  I would be happy to post it in my Weekly Column.

Linger MinglerLinger in Spring Lake, N.J. is hosting the “Linger Mingler,” a Men’s Night Out on January 31st from 6:30-8:00pm.  The “Intimate Affair” will feature a LIVE Fashion Show and complimentary cocktails.

2013 FEMMYThe Underfashion Club is hosting its annual FEMMY Gala on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Cipriani 42nd Street, NYC.  Again this year, the “Intimate Affair” will be hosted by Carson Kressley.  This year’s Student Design Contest is sponsored by Penn Asia Co., Ltd., Regina Miracle International Ltd. And Stretchline Holdings Ltd.  The theme is “Midnight Garden” – Seduction of Flowers.  The Underfashion Club will be presenting FEMMY Awards to Bloomingdale’s, Cosabella and The Lenzing Group, the Innovation Award is being presented to Hautelook, and the Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient is Josie Natori of The Natori Company.  For additional information regarding ticket purchase or to sponsor a table or to advertise in the event program, visit www.underfashionclub.org.

Bare Necessities Launches BarePlus for Curvy Girls Just Like Us!

Today, everyone in the Intimate Apparel industry is familiar with BareNecessities.com.  But I grew up with them.  The company was around long before they were a dot com.  Initially, Bare Necessities was a well established family-run, brick-and-mortar retailer with a few boutiques in central New Jersey.  I remember them as the intimate apparel store you visited if you needed specialty intimate apparel that couldn’t be found at my local Sears or at the Monmouth Mall.  My Mom took me to one of their shops for a strapless/backless bustier to wear to my junior prom.  Of course, that was ages ago…. (But I think I still have that fiber-fill “contraption” tucked away in a box along with the prom dress.)  Since launching as BareNecessities.com in 1998, they have emerged as the number one multi-brand online lingerie retailer.  And for good reason… they have always been ‘ahead of the curve.’ 

As a champion of curvy girls, I am pleased to announce that Bare Necessities launched a new online boutique designed specifically for curvy women called BarePlus by Bare Necessities.  And, I am honored to say that I was invited to attend their press conference at the Warwick Hotel in midtown Manhattan this afternoon where I received the news firsthand alongside fellow intimate apparel industry professionals, influential bloggers, publicists, media and press.  The theme of the event was “inclusion” for E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E.

The announcement regarding BarePlus came along with news of a Curvy Fashion Show to be hitting Fashion Week in September 2012.  Jeff Grinstein, CEO of Jeff Grinstein Entertainment which is responsible for the Curvy Fashion Show, stated that the new fashion show will be a high-end couture show that is dedicated to serving the full-figure woman and that it will change Fashion Week forever.

BarePlus by Bare Necessities will feature more than 500 bras that fit sizes 38A – 56J, including everyday bras, sports bras, and sexy bra and panty sets.  The website, www.bareplus.com, will offer more than 1,000 styles of plus size lingerie, hosiery and swimwear, from 81 brands including Elomi, SPANX, Bali, Wacoal, Hanky Panky and Calvin Klein.

“The launch of BarePlus reinforces our commitment to serving the woman with curves,” said Jay Dunn, Chief Marketing Officer for Bare Necessities.  “The launch marks the beginning of our effort to build the best shopping experience for curvy women.  Over the next several months, you’ll see more features, photography representative of our customer, and exciting new products from the world’s best brands that you won’t find anywhere else.”

BarePlus marks the first major effort executed by Dunn since joining Bare Necessities in 2011 as its first Chief Marketing Officer.  Dunn came from Lane Bryant, where he had been the mastermind behind the landmark “Red Bra” ad campaign.  The advertisement, which ran on American Idol, featured a plus size model flaunting a sexy red bra and panty set and became a national sensation after it was initially banned by both ABC and Fox for showing too much cleavage. The controversy ignited a national debate regarding how curvy women are portrayed in the media.

Having worked in the intimate apparel industry for over a decade, I can say with confidence that BarePlus will be a true success.  And, as a curvy consumer, I know that there is certainly a demand for an intimate apparel site dedicated to serving the plus size woman.

Intimate Insight: Dear John, For Valentine’s Day, You’ve Got The Pink Slip

The Superbowl is this Sunday.  And the only thing I know is that the NY Giants are in it, and Madonna is performing at halftime.  That’s where it ends.  For those of us living a life of lingerie, we’ve got our focus on Valentine’s Day this time of year (our own sort of Superbowl.)  For intimate apparel brands and retailers, a lot of energy is spent trying to capitalize on this annual celebration of love.  There’s no perfect formula to having a successful selling season, and retailers (as well as e-tailers) have tried every possible sales tactic in the book- markdowns, in-store events, sample sales, pop-up shops, gifts with purchase, 2-for-1, gift cards, etc.  What worked for one season or one holiday, may not work for another.  It’s a lot of trial and error, especially in a volatile marketplace.

I have a passion for discovering innovative merchandising methods.  So, when I spoke to Margo Andros, owner of The Pink Slip in NYC’s Grand Central Terminal, I was impressed by her creative approach to this year’s Valentine’s Day promotion.  First of all, a retailer must consider their clientele.  And from what I can tell, Margo has her customer all figured out!  Her store’s location is unique…. It is in one of the busiest commuter hubs in the world- the famed Grand Central Station!   What does this mean for her fun little lingerie store?  Margo shared a few secrets with me….  Her “bread and butter” is hosiery.  Huh.  Think about that….  High-powered execs hop off the Metro North from Westchester with a snag in their hose…. And The Pink Slip is there to provide a solution.  Of course she can buy a pair of L’Eggs Control Top Pantyhose at the local Duane Reade.  But, it’s just as convenient to pop into The Pink Slip for a pair of luxury Philippe Matignon stockings instead!  Problem solved.  Margo also explained that she needs to change her window displays more often than other local lingerie retailers.  Again, who woulda thought!!??  But it makes perfect sense….  Her target customers walk past her store day in and day out on their way to and from work.  Margo and her team understand the importance of keeping the store’s window display and product assortment updated and fresh-looking.  As a result, The Pink Slip has built a loyal following of men and women looking for intimate apparel, hosiery and other accessories for themselves or as gifts.
