Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

18 Sep

There’s a chill in the air…And I couldn’t be happier!  Before we know it, I’ll be donning my “uniform” of boots, button-downs and blazers.   Until then, I’m trying to enjoy the last bit of Summer.  I’m down the shore for a few days…attempting to get some much needed rest and relaxation in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, N.J.  I much prefer the beach during the “off season.”  The weather is still spectacular, yet it’s quiet and peaceful here.  I’ve taken walks on the beach, I’ve watched the sunrise at 6:30am, I’ve admired the adorable Victorian-style historic homes that line the streets in this neighborhood, I’ve had some of the best sea scallops I’ve ever tasted, I’ve wandered in and out of the boutiques around town….all by myself.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to cherish my time alone.  It’s been a delightful mini vacation!

While down here, I stopped in to see my friend Marla Wink at Indian Summer at Bay Village in Beach Haven.  I presented her with a challenge.  I was in the market for a new bra….  But I wanted something different.  I am such a creature of habit.  Nine times out of ten, I walk out of a bra boutique with the same styles I always wear.  So, I asked Marla to show me something new.  I walked into the store with an open mind and I let her run the show.  I told her what I typically wear and what I like and don’t like about the styles currently available to the full-busted consumer.  Over the years, I’ve become very loyal to the Eveden family of brands- Fantasie, Freya and Fauve.  So, when she suggested I try a Panache bra, I was a little hesitant.  But I promised myself to keep an open mind and I’m sure glad I did.  We scored!  I am in love with my new Panache Andorra Full Cup Bra.  We went up a cup to achieve the proper fit.  The lace is very soft yet powerful and I love the underbust/cradle construction.  The best part?  The color is a beautiful, rich teal color called Lagoon.  It’s perfect for Fall.  Great job, Marla!  You passed the test.  I hope the bra itself passes the test of time.  In addition, Marla had the Fantasie Rebecca bra in stock in color black.  This color is back-ordered in most of the stores in the tri-state area so I had to snag it while I could.  Lucky me!  I walked out of Indian Summer with two new bras to carry me through the end of the year.

Fashion’s Night Out was held on Thursday, September 6th.  I spent the evening with Bethenny Frankel at Macy’s Herald Square.  The Intimate Affair featured the Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers “Real Woman” Fashion Show.  It was great to see Bethenny’s fans on the runway modeling her shapewear line which is designed for every body.  They were so full of confidence!  The winners of Bethenny’s fashion show contest modeled the shapewear alone as well as styled into various looks which showed the guests how to wear this fashionable line that is meant to be seen.  It was an exciting event which was hosted and emcee’d by Bethenny herself.

My partner, Luis Paredes, and I attended Small Boutique Fashion Week on Saturday, September 8, 2012.  The SBFW2012 Fashion Show and Market is geared towards small business owners, emerging designers, and novelty designers that are looking to get their start by selling to small boutiques and unique shops.  We were pleased to see lingerie-inspired looks on the runway.  Several designers presented styles which were constructed of ultra fine and sheer fabrics which revealed the undergarments worn underneath.  In essence, the lingerie worn underneath became part of the total look.

The International Lingerie Show (ILS) was held September 10th through the 12th at the RIO in Las Vegas.  The ILS trade show leans towards the sexy/adult side of our industry.  Luis Paredes of The Lingerie Journal attended the trade show and has posted numerous articles and images of the show on www.TheLingerieJournal.com and on The Lingerie Journal Facebook page.

To celebrate the end of Fashion Week, The Lingerie Alliance hosted the official Nolcha Fashion Week Closing Party in collaboration with Label 55 on Thursday, September 13, 2012.  Nolcha Fashion Week is an award-winning event for independent fashion designers to showcase their collections to a global audience of press, retailers, stylists and industry influencers.  My partner, Luis Paredes, and I were very pleased to be partnered with Label 55 and Nolcha Fashion Week as they share our passion for supporting independent brands.

On Thursday, September 27th, Linda’s in Murray Hill is hosting a Simone Perele Trunk Show from 10am until 9pm.  Guests will have the opportunity to view the entire Fall 2012 collection and preview the Spring 2013 collection in store.  Linda is offering 10% off all Simone Perele purchases on the 27th (including pre-orders of the Spring 13 styles) plus each guest will receive a Free Gift with purchase.  After 6pm, Linda’s will be turned into a “Parisian Paradise” replete with Parisian treats and cocktails.  Oooo La La!

Also on September 27th, Sweetest Sin in Red Bank, New Jersey will be celebrating her third anniversary!  The party starts in the boutique at 5pm and includes free professional bra fittings, exclusive specials, 10% off all purchases, pink bubbly and light snacks.  Then… as if that wasn’t enough…. Guests are invited to join Angie Courtney, owner of Sweetest Sin, for an “after party” at Taste Lounge in the Red Bank Galleria.  If you bring your receipt from Sweetest Sin Boutique, you are treated to a free cocktail.  The Intimate Affair will feature live music, a Trunk Show showcasing the high-end lingerie and beauty brand Naked Princess, Gift Bags (including items from our favorite luxury brand, Naked Princess,) Raffle Prizes including an exclusive Gift Basket filled with steamy goodies and a Gift Card valued at $200 from Sweetest Sin!  As I’ve mentioned before, Angie Courtney is a true partner in her community and gives back in every way she can.  At this Intimate Affair, all proceeds from the Raffles and 20% of the proceeds from Taste Lounge will be donated to The Semper Fi Fund.  Also, Angie is gearing up for the ING New York City Marathon where she will be running on behalf of the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.  And, Angie is already making plans for the annual “Go Naked and Check Yourself” fundraiser in mid November which raises awareness of detectable cancers including breast cancer, skin cancer and testicular cancer.  More details to follow!

Happy Labor Day!  Labor Day marks the unofficial end of Summer.  For me, the “back to school” season means a new beginning…  Each year at this time, I find myself settling down, getting “back to business and back to basics,” reevaluating personal and professional goals and setting new ones.  It was this time last year that I launched my business Bra La Mode.  As I reflect back, I can’t believe it’s only been one year, as I’ve accomplished quite a bit during that time.  I look forward to seeing what’s in store for me and my businesses throughout the rest of 2012!

The official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC kicks off on the evening of September 5th with the 9th Annual Style Awards and continues through Thursday, September 13th.  Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is New York City’s single largest media event, taking place twice a year (February & September.)  The event provides top designers an international platform to showcase their collections to more than 100,000 industry insiders from around the world, including buyers, editors, retailers, celebrities, VIPs, and more.  With more than 80 designers’ shows over 8 days, it is known as the premier event worldwide where style, beauty, supermodels, and celebrities come together to celebrate the best in fashion.  Follow @MBFashionWeek on Twitter.

Fashion’s Night Out is this Thursday, September 6th.  For a complete listing of Fashion’s Night Out events in cities around the world, go to www.fashionsnightout.com.  Last year I took myself on a “Lingerie Tour” of lower Manhattan including stops at Journelle SoHo, Kiki de Montparnasse, Bloomie’s, La Perla and Agent Provocateur.  I chronicled my FNO journey in two of my first blog posts on Bra La Mode.  It’s really cool to look back to see where I was at this time last year and to see the personal and professional progress I’ve made.  This year I will be spending the evening with Bethenny Frankel at Macy’s Herald Square.  The Intimate Affair at Macy’s will feature the Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers “Real Woman” Fashion Show which will be hosted by the “queen of too much information,” Bethenny herself!

REMINDER!  Small Boutique Fashion Week is this Saturday….  The SBFW2012 Fashion Show and Market is geared towards small business owners, emerging designers, and novelty designers that are looking to get their start by selling to small boutiques and unique shops.  This edition will be held on Saturday, September 8th at The Metropolitan Pavilion and will feature three separate showcases at 12pm, 4pm and 8pm.  For more information:  www.smallboutiquefw.com.

Intimate Affair: Bethenny speaks ‘frankly’ about the launch of Skinnygirl Solutions at Macy’s

24 May

On Thursday, May 17th, reality star and entrepreneur extraordinaire Bethenny Frankel celebrated the launch of Skinnygirl Solutions at select Macy’s stores nationwide.  The Intimate Affair was held at the R Lounge in NYC’s Times Square.

Bethenny created the shapewear brand, Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers, for every woman & every body.  The shapewear brand differentiates itself from other brands by featuring “shapewear that’s meant to be seen.”  Bethenny spoke frankly about the line saying,It’s lazy lingerie; you’re wearing it now, and if you take your clothes off, you’re already sexy for your husband or your boyfriend or for a date.”  The unique shapewear line is very versatile and as Bethenny says, “it’s user-friendly.”  It’s your everyday undergarment, your lingerie, your shapewear and your ready-to-wear all in one!  The styles are designed to move seamlessly from day to night.  These functional and sexy layering pieces can be worn under a blazer or cardigan during the day…. Then, for a glam look in the evening, simply remove your cardigan or blazer and you’re ready for whatever the night brings!

22 May

Got any big plans for the coming Memorial Day Weekend?  My focus is on Swimwear rather than Intimate Apparel this week…  As long as this rainy, wet weather blows through before the weekend.  Fingers crossed for sunny skies!  I can’t wait to pull out the bra-sized Fantasie brand bikini top and matching high-waisted bikini bottom I picked up at La Petite Coquette here in the City earlier this season.

Here are a few Intimate Insights for the Week….

On Wednesday, May 16th, Hanky Panky and Sanrio hosted a party to celebrate the launch of the Hello Kitty for Hanky Panky collection.  The “invite only” Intimate Affair was held at Studio 450 in midtown Manhattan and featured special guest Hello Kitty, a flipbook photo booth, and Sephora Hello Kitty Beauty Express Services for make-up and fragrance.  The venue provided a spectacular view of the City as the sun set to the west.  The DJ was spinning great tunes & guests enjoyed signature Hanky Panky for Hello Kitty cocktails and Hello Kitty cupcakes.  The event was playful and fun and there was a lot of “hot pink” everywhere you looked…  Even Hanky Panky’s Glam Guru, J.D. Breen, colored his hair hot pink to commemorate the collaboration with Hello Kitty!  The event was held in support of The Humane Society of the United States.

The shapewear brand differentiates itself from other brands by featuring “shapewear that’s meant to be seen.”  Bethenny spoke frankly about the line saying,It’s lazy lingerie; you’re wearing it now, and if you take your clothes off, you’re already sexy for your husband or your boyfriend or for a date.”  Pop into your local Macy’s store to check out the lingerie-inspired Skinnygirl shapewear that’s meant to be seen.  *Disclaimer- in case you didn’t know, I spend my days representing Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers for Bethenny.  Now get your buns to Macy’s & buy some!

Intimate Insight: Bethenny Frankel Models Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers

10 Apr

Bethenny created the shapewear brand, Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers, for every woman & every body.  Having the actual women in her life model her collection was the only truthful choice.  Looking good is about having fun and having confidence; it is a state of mind, a certain attitude.  Every woman is a Skinnygirl, no matter what size or shape we are!

Last night’s episode of Bethenny Ever After on BRAVO featured a “behind the scenes” look at the Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers photo shoot.  Bethenny and her fellow Skinnygirls had a blast modeling the line at the famed MILK Studios.  Here’s the result…..

The Collection is currently available online at Bare NecessitiesHer Room and on SkinnygirlShapers.com.  The new SS12 Collection will be launching at select Macy’s stores in May.

Designer Review: Karl Lagerfeld Collection for Impulse! at Macy’s

11 Sep

When I tweeted that I was headed to Macy’s flagship on 34th Street in NYC to check out the new Karl Lagerfeld designer capsule collection for Macy’s Impulse! department, I had a lovely European Fashion Blogger kindly request that I share my thoughts…. So the following details my journey into Macy’s and my impression of the collection.

Karl Lagerfeld

The exclusive, limited edition Karl Lagerfeld designer capsule collection for Macy’s Impulse! department was much anticipated.  The Macy’s marketing and pr teams did a good job of creating the type of hype that is necessary to promote this type of collaboration…  Since I’m on a budget, I’m a real sucker for any opportunity to buy designer brands for less…  So, retailers such as TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and Century 21 score high marks in my book!  And now that it’s a popular trend to offer exclusive collections of designer brands to the masses at affordable prices… I’m in heaven!  So I knew I wanted to get a look at this collection months before it became available.

I chose to head over to Macy’s the day after the launch because I know the kinds of crowds that gather for these types of events (and because the day after the launch happened to be payday!)  Before heading to the store, I perused the collection online to pinpoint a few items that I might like to try.  I had zeroed in on a few things, so when I entered Macy’s, I was “on a mission.”

Since I’m on a budget, my goal was to find one piece that embodied the collection.  But at the same time, since I was limiting myself to one item, I was looking for something that could be worn in multiple ways.  I’ve found that it’s more practical to purchase classic items that can serve several purposes than to buy that one crazy piece that screams “I went to Macy’s and bought this insane-oversized-black-and-white-pattern-sweater-dress from the Karl Lagerfeld collection…. But if I wear it again anytime soon… You’re all going to notice!”  So, I had my eye on the Long Sleeved Metallic Ombre Tweed Jacket.  I thought that it could be paired nicely with a pair of black slacks for work or with a sexy, drapey black knit top, skinny jeans and strappy heels for an evening out….  Since it’s an outerwear item, I could get away with tossing it on over just about anything throughout the coming cooler months, and because it’s a subtle color & pattern (but with unique styling details), no one would judge me for wearing it two days in a row!

After running a few quick errands, I marched over to Macy’s and made a beeline for the Impulse! department (utilizing the lesser known escalator just inside the 6th Avenue entrance).  The collection was centrally located on the floor and welcomed the customer with an elaborate display which was illuminated and surrounded by mannequins which were well dressed in Lagerfeld’s key items.

Karl Lagerfeld display at Macy's Herald Square NYC

As I browsed through the rack displays, the first thing I noticed was the color.  The colors were beautiful….  Warm and dusty yet bold….  Pops of bright, raspberry pink.  Pink is my favorite color… Any shade of pink will do the trick…  So I was certainly drawn to the assortment.  If I had to put it into one word, it would be “sophisticated.”  The primary colors included a pale pink called Just Blush, a steely grey called Nine Iron, a bright berry pink, black, white and a wine color which was more of a “rusty rose.”  The colors were coupled with textures such as ombre metallic tweed and faux crocodile skin leathers, sheer, drapey fabrics and crinkle crepe (mostly woven fabrications).  The assortment included blouses, skirts, dresses, jackets, vests, shorts, suits, vests, an overcoat, and graphic tee-shirts.

The styling of the collection was beautiful.  My favorite features were the high-collars, the “unexpected” sleeveless styles and the ruching on the dresses.  The trim details added to the designer sensibility of the collection and included signature logo buttons, both clear and black rhinestones, and my new favorite trend- prominent, oversized zippers/ zipper pulls.

The assortment ran the gamut from “everyday elegant” modest and sweet styles to corporate daytime ensembles to couture-looking, high-fashion evening attire.  Karl Lagerfeld was quoted as saying “This is a composition of different looks for different hours of the day, different lifestyles.  It is a collection of elements a woman should play with.”  From my perspective, his assessment is right on.  The collection encapsulated various sensibilities and lifestyles.  There were styles for every woman within each of us and it would be easy to mix-and-match various styles to create numerous “looks.”

I was disappointed in the quality of the fabrics, but felt that it was in line with the retail price-points.  The tweeds were heavy, stiff and scratchy.  And the woven sheer fabrics used in blouses and dresses were commonplace.  The faux crocodile skin leathers were “pleathery.”  Although I felt that the fabrics could have been nicer, this would have driven up the price-point (especially because of the fabric consumption of each style).  The construction and stitching were good.  Styles were lined as needed using a signature logo printed lining.  These unpredicted details compensated for some of the inferior features of the collection such as average-quality fabrications.

I selected a few styles to take into the fitting room in hopes of finding one piece to make my own.  Unfortunately, nothing seemed to fit quite right.  It seemed to me that the styles were cut for tall, thin figures.  As a curvy girl, I gravitate towards knits because they are more forgiving of my “lady lumps.”  However, most of the collection was comprised of woven fabrics… And nothing seemed to fit quite right.  My greatest disappointment was that the one style I had hoped to walk away with had been sold out the day before (on the day of the launch).  I guess I wasn’t the only one with my sights set on snagging the Long Sleeved Metallic Ombre Tweed Jacket!  I walked into Macy’s ready to spend money, but I ended up walking out the door empty-handed.

Overall, I felt the sensibility of the collection was sophisticated and modern.  It was fashion-forward yet graceful and elegant.  If you’re on a budget, can wear woven styles that are cut for slender frames, and want a piece of the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, I would recommend the collection to you wholeheartedly.
