Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

10 Jan

Happy New Year!  For me, the New Year is a great time for reflection.  Many years ago I started a habit of keeping a journal.  I am not one to write in it daily; but I make it a point to pull it out in the first part of January to write out my accomplishments from the previous year and to list out my goals, hopes, dreams and initiatives for the coming year (both personal and professional.)  It’s fascinating to look at what was written the previous January.  Most of the time, I forget what I wrote!  Usually, the goals that were set have been accomplished (in some shape or form.)  And more often than not, the outcome is far better than I could have imagined!  So before I get you up to speed on the upcoming “Intimate Affairs,” I’d like to reflect back on 2012.

Dear Kate Ms MoxieIn 2012, we saw the launch of several new independent brands including Angela Friedman, Nevaeh Intimates, Fleur du Mal, Cheeki brand and Rouge Séduire among others.  Julie Sygiel re-launched the revolutionary, absorbent, leak-proof and stain-resistant underthings now known as Dear Kate.  And the Empowered By You panty was launched which enables underprivileged women to spearhead their own businesses.

The lingerie blogosphere expanded to include new bloggers and other independent intimate apparel professionals including my personal new fave, Caro the Lingerie Lesbian!

In ecommerce retailing, we saw new methods of marketing and selling intimates from sites including True & Co., IntiMint, AdoreMe.com and Ampere.  Ecom retailers are offering lingerie subscription services and other innovative methods of retailing.

I witnessed an increased awareness of the importance of a proper fit. There were numerous online “debates” regarding the best way to fit, vanity sizing and so on.  More and more brands, manufacturers and retailers are paying closer attention to the needs specific to the full-figure and full-busted consumer.  Early last year, Bare Necessities launched their sister site, Bare Plus, which is an online shopping environment dedicated to this consumer.

Freshpair Pic 1Several e-tailers made an attempt to answer the question of how to get a proper fit when purchasing online.  HerRoom.com launched the proprietary “Know your Breasts Bra Finder” questionnaire which purports to help you discover your best bra styles.  And Freshpair.com re-launched their website which now includes more personalized services such as an At-Home Bra Fit Service and a Men’s Underwear Club.  Freshpair also celebrated the 10th Anniversary of National Underwear Day by hosting a one-of-a-kind “It’s Time for a Change” pop-up store experience in New York City in August.

LingerieAlliance_horizontal logoIn August of 2012, my partner Luis Paredes, publisher of The Lingerie Journal (and The Business of Pleasure,) and I launched the online collaborative community of intimate apparel professionals known as The Lingerie Alliance.  The Lingerie Alliance was inspired by the Brand Affair Marketing and PR Panel Discussion we hosted during February Market 2012.  The Brand Affair proved to us that there is a need for a collaborative community of lingerie professionals as well as education, information and resources.  Throughout the year, we sponsored several events including NOLCHA Fashion Week’s Closing Party and the non-profit fundraisers PinkChoseMe’s BRA Day USA 2012 and Go Naked and Check Yourself.  We ended the year with a fun “Festive Affair” Holiday Networking Social which represented our vision for The Lingerie Alliance.  The coming year will bring more events, workshops and seminars tailored specifically for today’s intimate apparel professional and we hope to have the membership functionality for the site itself completed before Summer.

LingerieFW_imageLauren Rich of RICHPR announced that she will be launching LingerieFW in New York City in February 2013.  LingerieFW will be the first fashion week dedicated to intimate apparel brands.

In late October, the northeast suffered the wrath of Hurricane Sandy which delayed the quarterly wholesale market week and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses including my friend Marla Wink’s lingerie store, Indian Summer, in Beach Haven, Long Beach Island, New Jersey.  (I’m happy to report that Marla is as determined as ever to rebuild her store and is hopeful that she will re-open her doors in time for the busy Summer selling season down the shore.)

The Lingerie Collective is coming to New York City in February 2013!  The boutique trade show is well-known in London for featuring British and international emerging brands with a focus on innovation and luxury.

Jene Luciani and Moira Nelson_2012 HUG Awards GalaThe non-profit Underfashion Club and the Intimate Apparel Square Club continued their programs in 2012 including the FEMMY Gala last February, the H.U.G. Awards Gala in November, various other programs throughout the year and their annual Holiday parties in December.  Both organizations make significant contributions to our industry and raise funds to support their respective causes.

Angie Courtney, owner of Sweetest Sin

Other charity events included Go Naked and Check Yourself which was hosted in part by Sweetest Sin Boutique in Red Bank, New Jersey and included sponsors LELO and The Lingerie Alliance.

Overall, 2012 was a year full of growth and advancements.  I am motivated by the forward movement in our industry and look forward to seeing further progress throughout 2013.  I wish all of you the best of health, happiness, a sense of well-being, success and prosperity in your professional lives and in your personal endeavors.

Intimate Affair: Bra La Mode Makes Her Debut

14 Feb

Bra La Mode’s Debut Intimate Affair — an in-store Bra Fit Event — was held on January 29, 2012 at the unique, appointment-only, intimate apparel store, Bra*Tenders located in New York’s Theater district.  The event was a tremendous success as it provided women of all ages, shapes, and sizes the opportunity to receive a free bra fitting in an exclusive environment as well as education on the importance of a proper fit courtesy of Bra*Tenders.  The in-store Bra Fit Event was sponsored by renowned French lingerie brand, Chantelle Paris and leading lingerie publication, The Lingerie Journal.

The Intimate Affair brought together consumers, intimate apparel professionals, independent lingerie designers, influential lingerie bloggers, public relations reps, press and media as well as “Bra-lebrities” including celebrity stylist and author of The Bra Book, Jene’ Luciani, designer Layla L’Obatti and her partner Josh Verleun of lingerie brand Between the Sheets, designers Courtney Newman and Erica Paul of Dirty Dolls Lingerie, designer Ellen Jacobson of full-figure lingerie brand Elila, designer Asi Efros of the high-end independent lingerie line Ann Vogue, Ellen Lewis of LingerieBriefs.com, the “Lingerie Goddess” Margaret Shrum, lingerie designer Camille Block, publicist Lauren Rich of fashion PR agency RichPR which specializes in intimate apparel, legendary intimate apparel designer and lifetime member of the Intimate Apparel Square Club Roslyn Harte of Lances Harte, Intimate Apparel Square Club president Norma Reinhardt Mascarotti and IASC board members Michael De Prisco and Nina Levine among others.

My mission is to bridge the gap between independent lingerie professionals and larger scale intimate apparel brands, businesses and organizations.  Bra La Mode’s debut Intimate Affair accomplished that.  It’s really great to be part of a community of people who share the same passion.  And this is just the first of many events to come.

The event included a trunk show by Darlene Campbell of the full-busted clothing company Campbell and Kate.  Darlene showcased her innovative“CEO Shirt for the D.E.F. Woman” which ensures that all women can own a classic white shirt that fits them beautifully all over.  Campbell commented of the event, “I loved seeing the faces of women who wear D cups and up as they discovered that a Campbell & Kate button front shirt fits them perfectly.”

Author and bra-fit expert Ali Cudby signed copies of her recently released book “Busted: The Fab Foundations Guide to Bras that Fit, Flatter and Feel Fantastic.”  Cudby said, “Wearing a properly fitting bra is important to a woman’s health, so it was fabulous – and important – to have an event dedicated to helping women figure out their fit.”

Professional photographer Michael Steele who is known for “capturing the female form” snapped candid shots of guests enjoying the soiree.  Guests enjoyed Izze sparkling juice and champagne, as well as cupcakes courtesy of M Squared Sweet and Chic Treats.

The highlight of the Intimate Affair was the raffle for a Grand Prize basket which had a value of over $600.  Contributors to the raffle prize include Bra La Mode, Chantelle Paris, Campbell and Kate, author Ali Cudby, Ann Deal of Fashion Forms, and “Bra-lebrity” Jene’ Luciani.  Additional sponsors of the event include the wholesale buying platform Monkey N Middle and guitarist Alan Brace.  The Raffle basket was won by student Patricia Persaud from Brooklyn.

I also used the event to garner attention for the non-profit Intimate Apparel Square Club (IASC.)   I am a proud member of the Club and work hard to promote the organization’s work.  The IASC raises funds to support a variety of charitable organizations, with pediatric rehabilitation and treatment being the primary beneficiary of its fundraising activities. The IASC’s H.U.G. (Help Us Give) Award is presented to well-respected, high-profile companies, organizations and individuals at the IASC’s annual gala fundraiser in support of pediatric rehabilitation.  Ann Deal of Fashion Forms was the 2011 H.U.G. Award recipient.  Ann made a very generous contribution to this bra fit event.  At Bra La Mode’s debut Intimate Affair, guests were invited to make a monetary donation to support the “Kids.”

Intimate Insight: RichPR ~ Media Preview of Holiday ’11 and Spring/Summer ’12 Lingerie Collections

21 Oct

PR Star Lauren Rich of RichPR graciously invited me to preview the upcoming collections for the Intimate Apparel brands she represents.  What an honor and how lucky am I to get the inside scoop before the collections hit the floor!??!  Being an Intimate Insider has its perks.

Lauren Rich of RichPR

Lauren and her team worked tirelessly to prepare their penthouse suite at the AKA Times Square Hotel to welcome media and pr professionals to the invite-only preview which was named “Get Intimate with Intimates at Star Crossed Lovers.”  They converted the suite into a fantasyland of lingerie featuring brands: Lola Haze, the playful and flirty “fusion” collection of dresses, tops, lingerie and loungewear which can be worn as outerwear designed by Laura Mehlinger; Brulee Lingerie, the sophisticated, luxe line by designer Kristian Giambi; the ever dependable solutions based foundations and shapewear from heritage brand Va Bien; my new favorite wardrobe solutions brand Second Base; and the affordable, contemporary brands Affinitas Intimates and her full-busted sister, Parfait by Affinitas.  And don’t forget the Berry Ball!  What’s a Berry Ball you ask?  Great question…. The Berry Ball and Bag is the complete laundry solutions set specifically designed to care for your intimate apparel (including molded foam, underwire bras).  Now, any Intimate Insider knows you shouldn’t put your bras in the washing machine.  But truth be told, I’ve been known to do it from time to time (probably more often than I should).  But now, I can use my Berry Ball to ensure that my unmentionables won’t become mangled, tangled, twisted, and deformed!

While I would love to share every detail of the collections I perused at the preview, I’d be here all day….  Plus, it’s a lot more fun to give you a sneak peek and leave you in anticipation.  I saw soooo many fabulous, new, fun styles, colors, prints, fabrics and laces.  Luckily, you won’t have to wait too long as most of these collections will be in stores within the next few months.  Until then, I will tease you with a few highlights of these brands which are as unique and as individual as you can only imagine.

Laura Mehlinger from Lola Haze

Lola Haze never disappoints…. Staying true to her playful and flirty brand identity, Laura Mehlinger’s Spring/Summer ’12 collection is very fresh; inspired by the decadence of the roaring ‘20’s.  The first style which caught my attention was the Bee’s Knees Romper which is made with pale stripe cotton poplin with a rigid, all-over lace inset at neckline.  Although the romper body style isn’t new to Lola Haze, the cotton poplin fabrication is making its debut.  And, the most exquisite piece I saw was the Lola Haze Deco Slip, which is reminiscent of the avant-garde art movement, Cubism.  It is delicate; created using silk and chiffon in muted colors in abstract, color-blocking, accented with a bold, wide black stripe inset.  All of the Lola Haze garments are handmade right here in NYC’s garment district and many styles are one-of-a-kind and are available in only one colorway…. If you see something you like, you better grab it before it’s gone!

Lola Haze Deco Slip

Kristian Giambi’s Brulee Lingerie is the epitome of luxe sophistication.  I am a long-time fan of Brulee and it just keeps getting better.  For the first time, Kristian is introducing a print to the line.  For Spring/ Summer ’12, Kristian has developed an exclusive animal print which maintains the sophisticated presence of the brand.  It is a tonal, muted animal print available in Silver and Lilac colorways in a Chemise, Bralette, and Boyshort.

Brulee Lingerie Noir Satin & Lace Bralette and Boyshort in Fuchsia and Black

And, lace makes its first appearance for Brulee in the Noir collection.  Kristian developed Brulee Lingerie as an alternative to the oh-so-frilly lingerie that was so prevalent in the market.  So, I was surprised that she decided to introduce lace.  But, I’m certainly glad she took that risk as the new Noir corset-inspired Lace over Satin Soft Bra and Boyshort are truly beautiful and still maintain her brand identity.  These pieces are provocative and sultry yet elegant and feminine.  And, you’ve got to get a look at the new Ava Teddie which has been designed with only a center back and center front seam.  The style was designed to fit just right.  It is silk with chiffon trim…  Very sleek.  I suggest you adhere to Brulee’s direction—“Go ahead….Indulge!”

Va Bien's "Droop Proof" Ultra-Lift Perfect Strapless Bra

The heritage brand Va Bien has one mission—to put women in control.  They have succeeded in accomplishing this goal for over three decades.  Combining practical solutions with a French aesthetic, the brand was born out of a necessity.  Every Va Bien bra and shapewear style is developed with a purpose in mind.  Although this style is not new to Va Bien’s range, it was quite a discovery for me—the patented Va Bien Ultra-Lift Strapless Bra is a dream come true for a full-busted gal like me.  I don’t know how I haven’t come across this style before…. Nonetheless, I’m glad that I did!  I have always struggled to find the perfect Strapless Bra.  Although I don’t require Strapless Bras on a regular basis, when I do… it’s a real battle to find one that functions properly.  The styles that are available in the market typically slip down, smash me down, or create the dreaded uni-boob.  I am very pleased with the fit of the garment as well as the functionality.  Although the apex points seem a bit too far “east-west” for me, I tell ya… This sucker isn’t falling down and it provides great lift!  The patented “droop-proof” design is a result of the cup construction.  The cups have been developed with three “magic fingers” encased between two layers of foam creating the Ultra-Lift effect.  This style is available in full-figure and full-busted sizes.  What a great find.  And, I’d like to note that all of Va Bien’s styles are very well-priced.

Second Base Brittany Demi Camisole in Hot Pink

Speaking of being full-busted, I have always struggled with “cleavage control.”  It seems that no matter what I wear, boobs are busting out all over….  Enter the wardrobe solution—Second Base!  Second Base is a collection of demi camisoles which are available in virtually every color imaginable (to match every conceivable outfit).  In the past, I “contained” myself using tank tops, camisoles, wifebeaters, seamless bandeau bras… I could go on.  I never walk out of the house without an extra layer of protection.  The Second Base demi camisoles satisfy my need for a little more coverage.  And, I can’t wait to try the new Pippa demi cami with velvet piping at the neckline.  It sure beats a tank top or tee.  Second Base is introducing full-length camisoles for Spring/ Summer ’12 in Midi and Maxi lengths.  And the fabric… to die for!  Second Base wardrobe solutions styles are fabricated using an eco-friendly micro modal.  The handfeel and drape of the fabric is incomparable.

Although the brands are only about four years old, Affinitas Intimates, and her sister, full-busted brand Parfait by Affinitas, have created quite a stir.  As a full-busted consumer, I was initially introduced to Parfait while shopping for bras at Linda’s here in NYC.  From there, I discovered the original brand, Affinitas.  I have to say, I have been very impressed with the young contemporary styling (which appeals to both the young and young at heart), as well as the construction and quality, for the price-point.  Affinitas and Parfait by Affinitas offer a luxury-looking product at a great price!  Since I am hard to fit, I judge most intimate apparel on its fit and its ability to withstand the test of time.  Oftentimes, I jump to the conclusion that inexpensive translates into poor quality or improper fit.  These two brands have proved me wrong.  It is affordable luxury… I would definitely recommend these brands to the budget-conscious consumer.  Both brands carry basic everyday essential styles as well as specialty pieces.  And how exciting that I can now find full-busted bras under the $60 mark!  For years, I have been forced to shell out $60-$120 a bra for British or French brands in order to find bras that fit me properly.  Although I am still loyal to many of these brands which have “supported” me over the years, I am so excited that we now have an affordable, full-busted brand right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A.  This past season, I fell in love with Parfait’s Bess collection.  Bess is a printed stretch satin collection with pin-tuck details and satin-covered buttons.  The floral print is delicate and feminine, yet sophisticated.

Parfait by Affinitas Bess Balconette Bra and Hipster in Cream/Coffee

For the coming season, both brands are ultra feminine and sweet.  Main fabrics include satin and microfiber in solids and prints.  The trim details include light floral embroidery, eyelet trim, delicate narrow laces, beaded lace trims, European-look galloon laces with cording, tassels, crystal drop detail, and twin-straps pinned with satin ribbon bows.  Colors are both light/pastel and bright, while prints are fun yet romantic and coquettish (including gingham, pinstripes, and florals.)

I really like Parfait’s Isabella collection which features a softened bright pink floral print with contrast color beaded ribbon lace trim and satin ribbon bows with charm.  And for a more luxurious look, I highly recommend the glamorous, retro-inspired Alexis collection offered in solid ivory.  The high-waisted full brief is on my list of “must-haves” for Spring/ Summer ’12.  The Affinitas and Parfait by Affinitas brands are available in specialty stores/boutiques around the country as well as on ecommerce sites.  And, the company is targeting international markets to expand their business and to offer their brands to women around the globe.

Parfait by Affinitas Alexis Padded Bra and High-Waisted Brief in Ivory

Each brand represented by Lauren Rich is unique in terms of its brand identity and sensibility.  Her portfolio of brands is very well rounded.  You would be hard-pressed to find something you didn’t like…  And, if you’re anything like me….  You’d be hard-pressed to find anything you didn’t like!  All of the brands and products appeal to me, depending on my mood, spirit, or need on any given day…. From flirty and fun, to sleek and sophisticated, to practical and smart, to sexy and sassy!  Keep your eye on each of these brands as they are quickly emerging in their target markets as front-runners.  The Spring/ Summer ’12 collections are expected to be in store by February 2012.

Intimate Affair: VMV Hypoallergenics Hosts Lingerie Sample Sale

14 Oct

VMV Hypoallergenics hosted a Private Sample Sale featuring Intimate Apparel brands Lola Haze and Brulee Lingerie on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at VMV Hypoallergenics at 868 Broadway in Manhattan’s Union Square.

Brulee Lingerie & Lola Haze Sample Sale

Initially, I thought it an unusual locale for a lingerie soiree, but the back room proved to be perfect for the intimate affair.  The space is minimalist; it is light and bright which highlighted the intimate apparel collections being featured at the event.  Upon entering the spa, I made my way to the back room where I was greeted by the oh-so-jovial Laura Mehlinger, designer of Lola Haze…. And her mom, Dianne Mehlinger!  What a treat!  Dianne is quite proud of her daughter’s success…. For good reason!  After chatting with Dianne for some time about lingerie, marketing, and topics such as seo and social media marketing…we were interrupted by the sound of champagne bottles being popped open!  A cork shot across the room and the bubbly flowed onto the floor.  The party had begun!  The occasion was festive and the room was filled with shoppers looking to discover a great find at a great price.  Many pieces were one-of-a-kind and were available for purchase well below wholesale cost.

Lauren Rich from Rich-PR

I spoke with Lauren Rich from RICH-PR who hosted the event in collaboration with VMV at length about her pr firm, how she got started and the various intimate apparel brands she represents. It’s amazing what she has been able to accomplish for her age and it is inspiring to me as a business woman in the intimate apparel industry.

Laura Mehlinger from Lola Haze and her "Painted Birds Dress"

I love Lola!  I saw the Lola Haze collection at the Private Sale hosted by “Lingerie Goddess” Margaret Shrum on October 6th.  But….Laura brought a few pieces to this event that I hadn’t seen before.  I fell in love all over again with a few of her hand-painted silk tops.  And my new fave Lola Haze is the “painted birds dress.”  It is a bias cut jacquard silk charmeuse sheath dress with silk chiffon trim detail at the shoulders.  It is hand-painted by artist Charlotte Pinson.  Unfortunately, she didn’t have my size.  Hopefully, she’ll have something similar in her upcoming collection.  Fingers crossed!  I’ve been invited to preview her latest collection next week.  Being an intimate insider has its perks.  I’ll be sure to report on it in the coming weeks!

Designer Kristian Giambi from Brulee Lingerie & Macy Reeves

The other brand featured at the intimate affair was Brulee Lingerie, launched in 2009 and designed by the beautiful and statuesque Kristian Giambi.  Kristian studied visual communications and branding in school.  So, it was a dream for her to create her own brand from start to finish.  She has been involved in every aspect of the brand’s development and commented that she’s glad the line is produced right here in NYC because she can pop onto the sewing floor anytime she wants.  I asked, “If you could create any brand you wanted, how or why did you pick lingerie?”  Kristian simply said, “Because I couldn’t find what I was looking for.”  Kristian was looking for intimate apparel that was feminine yet strong; a representation of today’s modern woman.  Brulee Lingerie embodies this concept… Even the branding conveys this sensibility.  Kristian felt that the intimate apparel in the marketplace was either boring/ commonplace or, if it was feminine, it was too “frilly” and “lace-y.”  She said, “All women love something special.”  Go ahead and indulge…. In Brulee Lingerie!

Brulee Lingerie is chic and sophisticated.  It’s far from boring and it’s not frilly.  But it’s certainly feminine.  Kristian uses a lot of silk, satin, mesh, and chiffon.  Body styles include slips, babydolls, chemises, camidolls, teddies, as well as loungewear pieces.  Her “classic collection” is primarily made from cotton and she refers to these pieces as “wardrobe staples.”  Several of these pieces can be worn as innerwear, loungewear, or outerwear.  The fashion collections she featured at the sale are called “Vamp,” “Boudoir,” and “Noir.”  The colors were rich and luxe- gunmetal grey, merlot, café, as well as blush, ivory and black.  Styling and trim details include bold colorblocking, chiffon insets, satin piping, custom gold-tone buttons, and genuine Swarovski crystal buttons in black.  Sheer elegance…. I’m hoping to get a sneak peek at Kristian’s latest collection in the next few weeks as well.

I think Brulee Lingerie is a reflection of Kristian herself.  Kristian is feminine, yet powerful in personality.  She is a successful business woman, a wife, and an expectant mother (any day now).  She is driven and ambitious so it’s no surprise that Brulee Lingerie isn’t her only venture.  She is also a founding partner and creative advisor for Afingo.com.  Afingo is “the ultimate designer resource to get it made and get it sold.”  Afingo grants its members access to expert advice, resources, insider tools, and connections to help designers take their idea from concept to sale.  Kristian is a power of example to all women looking to achieve success in today’s world.

The Intimate Affair

It was a pleasure to attend this intimate affair and I met several fabulous, new people.  I look forward to seeing what’s next for both of these designers.  You can be sure that I’ll share my intimate insight with you as soon as I get a sneak peek of their coming collections.
