Intimate Insight: Peek Brooklyn Presents Hosiery With A European Flair

When Cristina Casciano-King found herself forced to wear all black at work, she began collecting a wide assortment of stockings and tights.  Cristina soon realized that legwear allowed her to add a personal touch to her otherwise “boring black” outfit.  Ten years and over 500 pairs of legwear later, she has long since quit that job and is now the proud owner of Peek Brooklyn, an online store offering a vast assortment of hosiery to fashionistas across the U.S.  Cristina traveled to Europe frequently and was disappointed with the hosiery assortment available in the States.  So she set out to bring her favorite brands to the U.S. market.  Now, she can embrace her funkier sense of style whenever she wants and sells stockings that allow other women to do the same thing!

Peek Brooklyn is everything you could want in a hosiery boutique.  Cristina focuses on imported brands that aren’t widely known or available in the U.S. market, with stunning results.  Peek Brooklyn carries everything from socks to hold-ups in both fashion styles (various fabrics, textures and patterns) as well as everyday basics.  Cristina hand selects the assortment to showcase brands that most people have never experienced.  The top three bestselling brands are House of Holland for Pretty Polly, Jonathan Aston and Phillipe Matignon.  Peek Brooklyn products range from $18 to $45 retail, making hosiery an affordable bit of style to accent any wardrobe.

The typical Peek Brooklyn customer ranges from 20 to 40 and has a unique sense of style.  Although Cristina sells basic stockings, her most popular products tend to have an “edge.”  Lots of her customers come back for the more daring fashion pieces.  As an example, Cristina says that she’s sold more Pretty Polly Super Suspender Tights than most small e-retailers.

Cristina said, “We aim to bring the finest hosiery the world has to offer to the U.S.  We don’t carry the typical brands found at department stores and are in the process of designing our own range of products.”

Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

Hey there lingerie lovers!  I apologize for not keeping up with the column these past few weeks….  My personal life got in the way of my lingerie life (yes, believe it or not, I have other aspects of my life besides bras & panties!)  Nonetheless, I’m back at it and excited to report on the latest happenings in the world of lingerie.  Here are a few Intimate Insights for the Week….

Corsetry expert Angela Friedman held an Intimate Affair including a presentation of her debut intimate apparel collection, the Versailles Collection, on Saturday, June 2nd at Gallery MC on 52nd Street, NYC.  Angela has been developing her line for over five years, all while running the ladies’ department at The New York City Ballet Costume Shop, building costumes for the Glimmerglass Opera and the American Players’ Theatre and making dresses for everyone’s favorite vocalist, Adele.  The vintage-inspired designs infuse an aristocratic flair with muted dusty hues to achieve a collection that evokes beauty, elegance, romance and pure indulgence!  The collection includes real steel-boned corsets, lacy and frilly bras and panties, bias cut slips and robes, accessories and garters.  Check out this emerging brand which is designed and manufactured right here in NYC!

On Tuesday June 5th, I co-hosted an Intimate Affair – a Fall & Winter 2012 Press Preview with the US distribution company, Revival Brands.  The event featured the coming collection of the luxury, Italian hosiery brand Philippe Matignon.  Well-known all over Europe, Philippe Matignon’s high-end hosiery was introduced to the States last year and is already a favorite among nationally recognized designers, celebrities, and stylists.  The event was a tremendous success.  We introduced the brand to hosiery buyers from prominent retailers including Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and BareNecessities.com as well as to editors and writers from various media platforms and publications.  It was a real honor to have been invited to be the intimate apparel expert and brand’s ambassador for the evening.  It’s a brand I’m really passionate about.  Take a look at their selection at www.PeekBrooklyn.com or on their own site www.philippematignon.us.

On Wednesday June 6th, I had the privilege of attending the runway show for swimwear designer Caitlyn Kelly’s debut collection.  The event was held on the rooftop of 2 Gold Street in the financial district.  Her swimwear collection is daring and bold, elegant and sophisticated.  Definitely keep your eye on Caitlyn Kelly!

Attention Lingerie Designers!  The next edition of the Lingerie Journal Designer Showcase is opening its doors this summer.  They had an incredibly successful show this past February with 10 independent designers showing their lines and a sold out Brand Affair Seminar and Lingerie Exhibition that drew in close to 200 guests including buyers, lingerie retail store owners, independent lingerie designers, wholesale manufacturers, influential lingerie bloggers, and other intimate apparel professionals.  Designers interested in exhibiting at this summer’s show should contact info@lingeriedesignershowcase.com to request an application. One more thought for the week…  Has anyone checked out True & Co.?  The long awaited website which claims to solve our bra fit problems with a proprietary online fit process (sans measuring tape) has finally launched.  Any thoughts?  I’d love to hear what you think.  Is this the answer?  I filled out the “simple quiz” and, unfortunately, they had no bras for me.  No surprise….

It seems like Spring is finally here.  The weather was beautiful this weekend…Making for a great Mother’s Day.  And I’m blown away by the number of Intimate Affairs happening this month!  It says a lot to me about the growth of our Industry!  Here are just a few Intimate Insights for the Week….

Last Thursday, the spectacular European Intimate Apparel brand Marlies Dekkers presented their upcoming Fall/Winter 2012 collection at a press preview held at the swanky SoHo House in NYC’s Meatpacking district.  Both the Marlies Dekkers line and her Undressed line were shown to the media, press and to various stylists.  The collections were inspired by “Cool Scandinavia” and featured exquisite details such as textured laces, flocking, leather trims and unique strap details (like only Marlies can!)  The collections evoked a sense of being in an ice castle or skiing the Swiss Alps!  Here is an image of my favorite silhouette of the season, the Padded Plunge Balcony Longline Bra from her Icicle line.

The girls from ILOVEAGOOD hosted a “Spring Fling” in collaboration with BedHead Pajamas at 252 Elizabeth Street in NYC last Thursday.  The Intimate Affair was a press preview by “invitation only” and featured fun drinks, great décor, and cute models in BedHead printed shorties.  This is BedHead’s very first New York store!  Be sure to pop into the store next time you’re in the ‘hood!

Also on Thursday, Fantasy Lingerie held an Intimate Affair featuring a runway show at the trendy Hudson Hotel in NYC.  The event drew a crowd of Intimate Insiders from the sexy side of the biz who partied it up into the wee hours of the eve.

I hosted an Intimate Affair on Saturday, May 12th at Bra Smyth on Broadway in NYC!  It was a perfect day for a “Celebration of Women” in honour of Mother’s Day.  It included An Afternoon Tea Party courtesy of Chambre de Sucre Imported Gourmet Sugars.  The Intimate Affair was sponsored by luxury French lingerie brand Simone Perele in collaboration with The Lingerie Journal.  Our featured guest was Fine Lingerie Stylist and Personal Shopper, “The Lingerie Goddess” Margaret Shrum.  One lucky lady walked away with the Grand Prize Raffle Basket which is valued over $600!  It included a Cami & Boyshort Set from luxury lifestyle brand Naked Princess, a $120 Gift Certificate from event sponsor Simone Perele, a $50 Gift Certificate courtesy of Bra Smyth, panties from Affinitas Intimates, a bottle of SOAK WASH, a signed copy of Jene Luciani’s The Bra Book and more.  Special thanks to Bra Smyth for hosting the Intimate Affair and to the Event Sponsors and Participants: Simone Perele, The Lingerie Journal, Chambre de Sucre, “The Lingerie Goddess” Margaret Shrum, Naked Princess, Affinitas Intimates, Jene Luciani and The Bra Book, Fashion Forms and SOAK WASH.

On May 16th, Hanky Panky and Sanrio are hosting a party to celebrate the launch of the Hello Kitty for Hanky Panky collection.  The “invite only” Intimate Affair will be held in midtown Manhattan and will feature special guest Hello Kitty, a flipbook photo booth, and Sephora Hello Kitty Beauty Express Services for make-up and fragrance.  The event is held in support of The Humane Society of the United States.  Join the fun by tweeting #hellokittyforhankypanky.

On Thursday, May 17th, Alison Brod PR is holding a press event with reality star and entrepreneur extraordinaire Bethenny Frankel.  The Intimate Affair will showcase her latest line of Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers which launched at select Macy’s stores nationwide this week.  Bethenny created the shapewear brand, Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers, for every woman & every body.  The shapewear brand differentiates itself from other brands by featuring “shapewear that’s meant to be seen.”  Pop into your local Macy’s store to check it out.  *Disclaimer- in case you didn’t know, I spend my days representing Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers for Bethenny.  Now get your buns to Macy’s & buy some!

CLO Intimo is hosting Spring Champagne & Strawberries, Soiree and Sample Sale this coming Thursday from 5-10pm at Archstone Murray Hill, 245 East 40th Street, Penthouse, NYC. Sip champagne, have some fun and try on the latest Spring styles at this Intimate Affair!  The Sample Sale will include designer jewelry by local artist Geri Roucaute’s line, Poupette.

I will be co-hosting a press/media event with the US distribution company, Revival Brands, on Tuesday June 5th.  The Intimate Affair will feature luxury, Italian hosiery brand Philippe Matignon.  Well-known all over Europe, Philippe Matignon’s high-end hosiery was just introduced to the States last year….  We will be previewing their Fall/Winter 2012 collection at this exclusive industry event.

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 19th, 2012.  The Intimate Apparel Square Club (IASC) is hosting a “H.U.G. Social Event” to raise awareness of the Club’s mission, to raise funds to support the pediatric rehabilitation center at NYU Medical Center’s RUSK Institute and to attract new members to the Club.  The event will be held at Legends Lounge on 33rd Street in NYC and will feature an open bar and light hors d’oeuvres.  Invitations will be sent out in early June.  To learn more about the Club, go to www.thehugaward.org.

Happy May Intimate Insiders!  The first week of May is Market Week for wholesale manufacturers in the Intimate Apparel industry.  Buyers from major retailers come into New York from around the country to get a look at the latest collections.  Most Buyers are finalizing their assortments for Fall & Holiday 2012 and previewing Spring 2013 collections.  Best of luck to everyone showing this Market.

During Market, the Intimate Apparel Council is holding “Retail Mobile Engagement” on Wednesday, May 2nd at the Union League Club, a panel discussion on mobile marketing. The panel will explain the different types of action codes, how to develop companion apps for iphone and andrioid platforms, and how a mobile engagement campaign can improve your business. The discussion will also include how to improve communication within your company using mobile devises. Featured Speakers include Leslie Burke, Director of Interactive Print at Conde Nast, John Puterbaugh, Ph.D, CEO & Founder at Nellymoser, Inc., and Liz Smith, Vice President of Marketing at Wacoal America, Inc.  The Intimate Apparel Council is a division of the American Apparel and Footwear Association.

The Lingerie Goddess, Margaret Shrum, is showcasing several NY-based Lingerie Designers at the “Shop for Kids” Spring Shopping Soiree on Tuesday, May 1st from 6-8pm at the Doncaster Fashion Showroom at 145 West 57th Street, 20th Floor (between 6th & 7th Aves.)  Margaret will be accompanied by Alexis Chasman who will be offering her Spring Accessories Collection.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Change for Kids.  Join the Intimate Affair, have a glass of wine and indulge in affordable luxury!

My bosom buddy Jene Luciani taped a “bra makeover” segment for Wendy Williams on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 and I was asked to model the Curvy Kate “Princess” Bra on the show!  Check out the Video on YouTube.  You’ll get a kick out of it.  Just for the record, I was not pulled from the studio audience….  And no, I don’t really walk around sporting a bad case of the dreaded “quadra-boob!”  Taping this segment was a blast.  Technically speaking, I like to think I am the very first Curvy Kate USA Star in a Bra model!  My friend Erin McLaughlin from Bare Necessities joined us at The Wendy Williams Studio on Wednesday and was a lifesaver….  She helped to get me scooped, swooped and lifted into my Curvy Kate!  Bare Necessities provided vouchers to all of the audience members to redeem for the products featured on the segment!

ILOVEAGOOD hosted the store opening party for Bradelis New York on Thursday, April 26, 2012 in Nolita, NYC.  Guests of the exclusive Intimate Affair were offered bra fittings courtesy of the Bradelis bra fitters.  The Japanese fit technique of Bradelis is quite unique as compared to traditional U.S. methods.  I highly encourage you to visit one of Bradelis New York’s three locations to experience it for yourself.  Guests at the event included Luis Paredes, publisher of The Lingerie Journal, Krista Purnell of The Lingerie Post, “The Lingerie Godess” Margaret Shrum, Melissa Franchi of Nevaeh Intimates, Laura Mehlinger of Lola Haze Lingerie, Christi Reid of Journelle, among others.

Intimate Insight: Philippe Matignon- Luxury Italian Hosiery

Even though temperatures have been heating up lately, there’s no reason to put away your stockings!  Philippe Matignon makes wonderful luxury Italian hosiery, and carries a range of products that will take you through the freezing cold winter straight into the heat of summer.  Philippe Matignon’s unique aesthetic and extensive collections offer the stylish woman a variety of feminine tights, sheers and opaques in a range of colors, textures and patterns.  Silhouettes include basic tights, stay-ups, knee-highs, leggings and socks.  The brand offers a Classic Collection of timeless styles which provide quality and luxury for any occasion, season or for everyday.  While the Fashion Collections are renewed season by season and are distinguished by their range of textures, laces/embroideries and fine finishing touches- from light and fresh designs for Spring/Summer to more structured styles for Fall and Winter. 

Philippe Matignon hosiery is a perfect example of the old adage “you get what you pay for.”  Their products range from $12 to $70 in price.  But their legwear are all well worth the price.  The parent company, Golden Lady, is a fully vertical operation.  They produce over 1 million pairs of legwear per day.  They start with the nylon fibers.  The only raw material they purchase is Lycra.  Each nylon thread is double or triple wrapped with Lycra, which helps the stockings and other legwear products to stay strong and avoid those nasty runs and snags that everyone hates.  This is what sets the brand apart from its competition.  In addition to their own brands, Golden Lady produces Private Label legwear for well-known brands such as DKNY, Calvin Klein, Hue and No Nonsense.

Golden Lady owns and operates the Golden Point chain of department stores in Europe (with over 500 doors.)  Thus, the Philippe Matignon brand has been incredibly popular in Europe for years, but they just hit the US market last year.  Since then, they’ve been spotted on the runway at New York Fashion Week and have become a favorite among US stylists and celebrities.  The company also has an Intimate Apparel line which will be introduced to the US Market later this year.  

In addition to their unique knitting and production processes, the company pays a lot of attention to detail in designing the luxurious Philippe Matignon products.  If you have issues with thigh highs slipping down by the end of the day, try a pair of Philippe Matignon thigh high stockings.  Their thigh highs have comfortable bands at the top that prevent slippage, yet keep you comfortable all day (avoiding the “pinch” that is so common among other brands.)

Intimate Insight: Dear John, For Valentine’s Day, You’ve Got The Pink Slip

The Superbowl is this Sunday.  And the only thing I know is that the NY Giants are in it, and Madonna is performing at halftime.  That’s where it ends.  For those of us living a life of lingerie, we’ve got our focus on Valentine’s Day this time of year (our own sort of Superbowl.)  For intimate apparel brands and retailers, a lot of energy is spent trying to capitalize on this annual celebration of love.  There’s no perfect formula to having a successful selling season, and retailers (as well as e-tailers) have tried every possible sales tactic in the book- markdowns, in-store events, sample sales, pop-up shops, gifts with purchase, 2-for-1, gift cards, etc.  What worked for one season or one holiday, may not work for another.  It’s a lot of trial and error, especially in a volatile marketplace.

I have a passion for discovering innovative merchandising methods.  So, when I spoke to Margo Andros, owner of The Pink Slip in NYC’s Grand Central Terminal, I was impressed by her creative approach to this year’s Valentine’s Day promotion.  First of all, a retailer must consider their clientele.  And from what I can tell, Margo has her customer all figured out!  Her store’s location is unique…. It is in one of the busiest commuter hubs in the world- the famed Grand Central Station!   What does this mean for her fun little lingerie store?  Margo shared a few secrets with me….  Her “bread and butter” is hosiery.  Huh.  Think about that….  High-powered execs hop off the Metro North from Westchester with a snag in their hose…. And The Pink Slip is there to provide a solution.  Of course she can buy a pair of L’Eggs Control Top Pantyhose at the local Duane Reade.  But, it’s just as convenient to pop into The Pink Slip for a pair of luxury Philippe Matignon stockings instead!  Problem solved.  Margo also explained that she needs to change her window displays more often than other local lingerie retailers.  Again, who woulda thought!!??  But it makes perfect sense….  Her target customers walk past her store day in and day out on their way to and from work.  Margo and her team understand the importance of keeping the store’s window display and product assortment updated and fresh-looking.  As a result, The Pink Slip has built a loyal following of men and women looking for intimate apparel, hosiery and other accessories for themselves or as gifts.
