Intimate Affair: The Lingerie Alliance Sponsors Lingerie Pillow Fight Party with Social Exposure Media

On June 26th, 2013 at XVI Rooftop Lounge, Social Exposure will produce a 300 person lingerie pillow fight party with cocktails sponsored by Hammer + Sickle Vodka, featuring lingerie by Rouge Seduire and in collaboration with The Lingerie Alliance.

Pillow5A sexy yet playful event meant to bring out our childlike humor; sprinkled with a tinge of naughtiness.

Invited guests MUST attend in lingerie or sleepwear to keep the theme (and photos, of course) consistent.  Men and women are encouraged to bring their own pillows and at the height of the night, the pillow bashing begins with an unexpected explosion of feathers, glitter and absolute (tasteful) mayhem!

The purpose of this event is not only to fulfill every mans dream (LOL), but to encourage creative, outside-the-box interaction by forcing active networking and activity that you don’t normally get to participate in. Yes, these events have a seductive side, but the main purpose is to spread a positive message of body awareness and sensuality where oftentimes in a metropolis such as New York, social pressures can take a toll on the healthy mind.

The winter weather has arrived!  It has been incredibly brisk here in New York.  And I understand there was a bit of snow in Paris during the 50th Anniversary edition of Salon International de la Lingerie as well.  Despite the delayed flights and mucky city streets, I bet the flurries inspired a certain romanticism. 

Salon de la Paris_ICE imageI can only imagine the Paris city lights twinkling through a nighttime snow fall… It seems apropos that the theme of the renowned show’s trend forum was “Ice Land” which featured four “universes” — Romantic, Innovation, Savage and Neo Nude.  I first saw this emerging trend last year at a preview of the Marlies Dekkers Winter 2012 “Ice Queen” – Cool Scandinavia collection.  At first glance, I fell in love with the icy, frosted, muted hues which were presented in delicate snowflake-inspired laces and embroideries adorned with crystal embellishments.  The colors are quite a departure from the more traditional lingerie colors- black, nude, pink and red.

Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

Let’s cut right to the chase.  There are tons of Intimate Affairs over the next few weeks.  Great opportunities for networking with fellow industry pros and excellent bargains for lingerie collectors!  Or perhaps you would like to make a difference this Season by getting involved in one of the industry’s charitable organizations?  I hope to see you at one of these festive events.

On December 4, 2012, The Underfashion Club hosted its annual Holiday Party at The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park South.  The Intimate Affair featured dinner, dancing and a whimsical bra & bottoms design contest.  In addition, gifts of clothing and toys were collected and donated to the New York Foundling Children.  Members of the Club and other industry professionals came together to celebrate the season in style.  Stay tuned for pictures of the event and the list of design contest winners.

Paris Trend Event Dec 6thThe Paris Region Economic Development Agency (PREDA) is hosting a trend presentation on Thursday, December 6th at the Consulate General of France in NYC.  The presentation is a fresh insight into the latest fashion and home trends by the trend forecasting agency NellyRodi.  It will be followed by a panel discussion between Paris-based trade shows and American trend experts.

Intimate Affair: Intimates Industry Businesses Collaborate to Support Go Naked and Check Yourself Cancer Awareness Event and Fundraiser

On Sunday, November 18, 2012, intimates industry businesses including the professional organization for intimate apparel professionals, The Lingerie Alliance, and the world’s leading designer brand for intimate lifestyle products, LELO, joined lingerie store owner and buyer, Angie Courtney of Sweetest Sin in Red Bank, N.J. to support Go Naked and Check Yourself, the 2nd annual cancer awareness event dedicated to raising funds and bringing awareness / prevention to detectible cancers where you can go naked and check yourself – skin, breast and testicular cancers.

The unique, sold-out “Intimate Affair” which was hosted by Angie Courtney of Sweetest Sin and Chris Paseka from the downtown Red Bank specialty bakery, Sugarush, was held at TEAK Restaurant and was sponsored by over 50 area businesses.  Although the event encourages guests to “get naked,” there was no nudity at the event.  However, lingerie-clad female models and male models wearing name-brand boxers and briefs amused guests while they sold raffle tickets throughout the affair.  In addition to the raffle, the event featured a silent auction including gifts worth thousands of dollars.  Cancer survivor and motivational speaker DonnaLyn Giegerich kicked off the event by promoting the event’s theme – go naked and check yourself.  And, every guest left the event with an education and a Gift Bag including products, samples, discount cards/ coupons, certificates and more from area businesses and the intimates industry event sponsors, The Lingerie Alliance and LELO.

“There were already a ton of local fundraisers that are more formal, like galas. We’ve been to a lot of them, and we will continue supporting them because they do a great job at raising awareness,” Paseka said. “But we wanted to host something that was a little more funky and quirky.”

More than $10,000 was raised at the event with 100% of the proceeds being donated to four charities – the American Cancer Society, Livestrong, the Young Survival Coalition, and the newly formed Red Bank-based storm relief non-profit organization, RebuildRecover.  The areas surrounding Red Bank, N.J. were hard hit during Hurricane Sandy and recovery efforts have only just begun. 

“Raising money for cancer awareness is still our primary goal, and cancer will still be there when the recovery from Hurricane Sandy is complete,” Paseka said. “But we felt that it was our responsibility to also help address the more immediate needs of our community in some way this year.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month… which means that intimate apparel brands and businesses are stepping up to do their part to raise awareness and funds to “support” the organizations that dedicate themselves to this important cause.  Let’s take a moment to reflect on the hundreds of thousands of lives that have been lost to Metastatic Breast Cancer.  It seems that Breast Cancer Survivors get most of the attention this time of year….  Amidst the pink ribbons, armbands, t-shirts and such…  There are the family and friends of those who can no longer celebrate the good news of a clean bill of health.  To find out more about Metastatic Breast Cancer, go to www.mbcn.org

Intimate apparel companies Freshpair.com, Naked Princess, and The Lingerie Alliance came together to sponsor PinkChoseMe Foundation’s BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AWARENESS (BRA) Day USA 2012 Celebration, an awareness and fundraising event held on Wednesday, October 17th, 2012.  The event’s primary sponsors included the Breast and Plastic Surgeons at the Weill Cornell Breast Center in NYC.  I was so moved by the breast cancer survivors that attended the event and the stories of those who were lost to metastatic breast cancer. Truly inspiring!  I am even more committed to dedicating my time and energy to supporting this cause. A year ago, I was embarrassed to discover that I knew so little about this important issue.  Today, I am proud to be involved and sharing the message of hope.

Wolford makes Shapewear?  YES, they do… And it’s as fabulous as their legwear.  In fact, lastweekend I popped into the Wolford store in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle to steal a peek at the current Fall line.  Lots to add to my “Wish List.”  The ladies of ILOVEAGOOD are hosting an invite-only Intimate Affair at the Wolford Showroom today, October 25th.  Guests will be treated to Wolford’s “Shape and Control” experience.  Cocktails and a private shapewear fitting…. PLUS, a Free Gift!

Tomorrow, Friday, October 26, 2012, Linda the Bra Lady is hosting a Survive&Thrive Party at her Murray Hill store on 3rd Avenue in NYC.  The Intimate Affair will feature discounts on Anita brand products (basic bras, maternity, mastectomy and swimwear styles!), FREE gifts, a raffle, inspirational stories, goodies, FREE cocktails and treats, and will raise funds for a great cause! 

On Monday, November 5th, the Intimate Apparel Council is hosting “Innovative Peek at Intimate Apparel.”  Guests will hear from Ken Walker, Operating Partner – Innovation, MarvinTraub Associates, a renowned industry leader in retail design and brand building, as he speaks about the importance of using innovation to achieve success in a global marketplace.  This Intimate Affair will be held at the Union League Club on 37th Street.  Registration is FREE for all employees of an IAC member company.  The Intimate Apparel Council (IAC) is one of the most prestigious organizations in the industry and is comprised of leading designers, brands, retailers and suppliers of intimate apparel products.  The mission of the IAC is to stimulate the growth of the intimate apparel business by creating a network and a forum to actively identify, address and act on matters of interest to the industry.  The IAC cooperates with consultants and others in gathering information of special concern to intimate apparel design houses and engages in public relations programs for the benefit of the consumer, the retailer and the manufacturer and design house.  The Intimate Apparel Council is a division of the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

On November 7th, CASS Shapewear is hosting a press preview event– “Champagne, Caviar and CASS.”  Guests will have the opportunity to preview the CASS Spring ’13 Collections with Founder/Designer Susan Ledyard at the invite-only Intimate Affair.

The Intimate Apparel Square Club’s 57th Annual H.U.G. Awards Gala is being held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012.  This year’s Intimate Affair (called “An Enchanted Evening”) honors LuAnn Via, President and CEO of Payless ShoeSource, Inc., as well as Steven Chernoff, chairman of Rago Foundations, LLC and Janet Peters will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to the Club.  The annual event raises funds to support NYU Langone Medical Center’s RUSK Institute and Tisch Hospital.  Join us on November 7th at 230 Fifth Penthouse to celebrate the humanitarian achievements of our honorees and to support the “RUSK Kids.”  By the way, a little birdie told me that Bralebrity Jené Luciani may be involved in this event in a BIG way….  Stay tuned for the official announcement!

The Lingerie Alliance is proud to be participating in another fundraiser on November 18th at Teak Restaurant, in Red Bank, New Jersey.  The Intimate Affair, GO NAKED AND CHECK YOURSELF, is an evening dedicated to bringing awareness / prevention to detectible cancers where you can go naked and check yourself – skin, breast and testicular cancers.  The event is presented by Sugarush (a specialty bakery in Red Bank, NJ) and the award-winning lingerie boutique, Sweetest Sin.  The mission of Go Naked and Check Yourself is to take the stigma of embarrassment out of checking yourself, because early detection can prevent long term issues.  All proceeds from the event benefit charities such as The American Cancer Society.

ClosetDash Shop and the leading blog for full-busted women, Hourglassy are excited to sponsor the first event of its kind, a Busty Clothing Swap from 11am-2pm on Saturday, October 20th, for women who wear dress sizes 2-16 and bra cups D and higher, at ClosetDash Shop’s new space on the fourth floor of 30 E. 20th Street in Manhattan, NYC.

“Forty women with similar body types in the same room means everyone should be able to find something she loves that fits,” says Darlene Campbell, founder of the full-busted clothing line Campbell & Kate and creator of the blog Hourglassy.  “We also have amazing raffle and gift bag items from some of the best full-bust brands out there.”  In addition, Bottomless Closet will be in attendance to accept donations of clothing.

Finding clothing that fits is a perpetual challenge for women with small backs (a 28-36 bra band) who wear D cups and higher.  Campbell began her blog in 2008 to help full-busted women discover the lingerie and clothing lines that cater specifically to them.  When she blogged about attending ClosetDash Shop’s first swap in May, she realized there was enough interest for a large-bust-specific swap.

It was only a matter of time before ClosetDash Shop’s founder, Jennifer Lee, approached her about co-sponsoring such an event.  “There’s potential for more body-specific swaps in the future,” says Lee.  “Swaps already have a fun sense of community, but imagine the shared laughter in a room full of tall women, or women with large hips, or really petite women?”

Participants will be charged a $10 admission fee and should bring up to ten items of clothing in sizes 2-16. Advanced registration is recommended, at www.cdsbustyswap.eventbrite.com.

Intimate Affair: Lavette Slater to Donate a Glam Makeover to Breast Cancer Survivor Susan Blinken at PinkChoseMe Foundation’s BRA Day USA Celebration

The breast cancer awareness organization PinkChoseMe Foundation is hosting BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AWARENESS (BRA) Day USA 2012, an awareness and fundraising celebration, on October 17th, 2012.  Tiffany Jones, Founder and President of PinkChoseMe Foundation, is working with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgery Foundation to bring BRA Day USA 2012 to New York City for the very first time.  The event is sponsored by the Breast and Plastic Surgeons at the Weill Cornell Breast Center in NYC.  This unique awareness and fundraising event is being held at the upscale Martin Lawrence Gallery in New York’s famed downtown neighborhood, SoHo.  The event is expected to attract numerous celebrities and other notable / prominent, world-renowned individuals to support this important cause.

This year nearly 227,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  Research has found that nearly 7 out of 10 women are unaware of their breast reconstruction options at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis, a number that is more pronounced among minority and uninsured women.

These numbers exist in spite of federal and state laws that require health insurers (including Medicaid and Medicare) to cover breast reconstruction procedures along with a number of state laws promoting a team approach to breast cancer that ensure a plastic surgeon is consulted prior to surgical mastectomy.

PinkChoseMe is committed to closing this loop.  It is in that vein that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in collaboration with The Plastic Surgery Foundation launched a two year public awareness campaign that seeks to increase the number of women who are informed of their surgical reconstruction options at the time of their diagnosis and prior to mastectomy.

The campaign strategy integrates media, industry, marketing, public relations, celebrity endorsement and meaningful research to raise awareness and educate the public about the options available post-mastectomy.

PinkChoseMe stands as a partner in this effort and is organizing the awareness and fundraising event at the Martin Lawrence Gallery.  Money raised from the event will be donated to the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund of The PSF (a 501c (3) organization.) The restricted fund is purposed with increasing public awareness among women about their breast reconstruction options, funding charity care for uninsured women seeking breast reconstruction and researching surgical breast reconstruction.

Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

There’s a chill in the air…And I couldn’t be happier!  Before we know it, I’ll be donning my “uniform” of boots, button-downs and blazers.   Until then, I’m trying to enjoy the last bit of Summer.  I’m down the shore for a few days…attempting to get some much needed rest and relaxation in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, N.J.  I much prefer the beach during the “off season.”  The weather is still spectacular, yet it’s quiet and peaceful here.  I’ve taken walks on the beach, I’ve watched the sunrise at 6:30am, I’ve admired the adorable Victorian-style historic homes that line the streets in this neighborhood, I’ve had some of the best sea scallops I’ve ever tasted, I’ve wandered in and out of the boutiques around town….all by myself.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to cherish my time alone.  It’s been a delightful mini vacation!

While down here, I stopped in to see my friend Marla Wink at Indian Summer at Bay Village in Beach Haven.  I presented her with a challenge.  I was in the market for a new bra….  But I wanted something different.  I am such a creature of habit.  Nine times out of ten, I walk out of a bra boutique with the same styles I always wear.  So, I asked Marla to show me something new.  I walked into the store with an open mind and I let her run the show.  I told her what I typically wear and what I like and don’t like about the styles currently available to the full-busted consumer.  Over the years, I’ve become very loyal to the Eveden family of brands- Fantasie, Freya and Fauve.  So, when she suggested I try a Panache bra, I was a little hesitant.  But I promised myself to keep an open mind and I’m sure glad I did.  We scored!  I am in love with my new Panache Andorra Full Cup Bra.  We went up a cup to achieve the proper fit.  The lace is very soft yet powerful and I love the underbust/cradle construction.  The best part?  The color is a beautiful, rich teal color called Lagoon.  It’s perfect for Fall.  Great job, Marla!  You passed the test.  I hope the bra itself passes the test of time.  In addition, Marla had the Fantasie Rebecca bra in stock in color black.  This color is back-ordered in most of the stores in the tri-state area so I had to snag it while I could.  Lucky me!  I walked out of Indian Summer with two new bras to carry me through the end of the year.

Fashion’s Night Out was held on Thursday, September 6th.  I spent the evening with Bethenny Frankel at Macy’s Herald Square.  The Intimate Affair featured the Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers “Real Woman” Fashion Show.  It was great to see Bethenny’s fans on the runway modeling her shapewear line which is designed for every body.  They were so full of confidence!  The winners of Bethenny’s fashion show contest modeled the shapewear alone as well as styled into various looks which showed the guests how to wear this fashionable line that is meant to be seen.  It was an exciting event which was hosted and emcee’d by Bethenny herself.

My partner, Luis Paredes, and I attended Small Boutique Fashion Week on Saturday, September 8, 2012.  The SBFW2012 Fashion Show and Market is geared towards small business owners, emerging designers, and novelty designers that are looking to get their start by selling to small boutiques and unique shops.  We were pleased to see lingerie-inspired looks on the runway.  Several designers presented styles which were constructed of ultra fine and sheer fabrics which revealed the undergarments worn underneath.  In essence, the lingerie worn underneath became part of the total look.

The International Lingerie Show (ILS) was held September 10th through the 12th at the RIO in Las Vegas.  The ILS trade show leans towards the sexy/adult side of our industry.  Luis Paredes of The Lingerie Journal attended the trade show and has posted numerous articles and images of the show on www.TheLingerieJournal.com and on The Lingerie Journal Facebook page.

To celebrate the end of Fashion Week, The Lingerie Alliance hosted the official Nolcha Fashion Week Closing Party in collaboration with Label 55 on Thursday, September 13, 2012.  Nolcha Fashion Week is an award-winning event for independent fashion designers to showcase their collections to a global audience of press, retailers, stylists and industry influencers.  My partner, Luis Paredes, and I were very pleased to be partnered with Label 55 and Nolcha Fashion Week as they share our passion for supporting independent brands.
