Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

28 Nov

The Holiday shopping season is officially underway….Thanksgiving is behind us, Black Friday sales began earlier than ever (many retailers held pre-Thanksgiving Day sales on Wednesday,) online sales on Black Friday topped the $1 Billion mark for the first time ever and the busiest shopping weekend of the season was capped by Cyber Monday specials.  Did you score any exceptional steals?  How do you navigate through the sea of sales?  Do you stick with your favorite retailers or did you venture outside of your comfort zone?  Personally, I avoid shopping on Black Friday.  I’m famous for waiting til the last minute… Oftentimes shopping on Christmas Eve!  How many of you shop for yourselves this time of year?  Or do you stick to your Christmas list with a fierce determination to stay within your budget?  Most importantly… How many of you purchased lingerie this past weekend???

When is lingerie an appropriate gift?  I recently helped a friend shop for a Bachelorette Party gift….  I took her to La Petite Coquette on University Place, NYC.  Rather than simply purchasing one piece, we put together a “basket” of assorted items including the Hanky Panky Signature Lace Keyhole Teddy in black, Booty Parlor’s Good Girl Bad Girl Feather Whipper, a sexy sleep mask among other things.  What fun we had!  And I was told that this gift was the highlight of the Bachelorette Party.

Here are the Upcoming Intimate Affairs to celebrate the Season:

On December 4, 2012, The Underfashion Club is hosting its annual Holiday Party at The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park South from 5:30-9:00pm.  The Intimate Affair will feature dinner, dancing and a whimsical bra & bottoms design contest.  In addition, gifts of clothing and toys will be collected for the New York Foundling Children.  Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door.

The Paris Region Economic Development Agency (PREDA) is hosting a trend presentation on Thursday, December 6th at the Consulate General of France in NYC.  The presentation is a fresh insight into the latest fashion and home trends by the trend forecasting agency NellyRodi.  It will be followed by a panel discussion between Paris-based trade shows and American trend experts.

Bra La Mode presents a Festive Affair Holiday Trunk Show on Saturday, December 8th featuring Dirty Dolls Lingerie, Love & Dream Sleepwear and Loungewear and introducing – for the first time ever –  luxury lingerie line Rouge Séduire.  As an added bonus, Stella and Dot jewelry and accessories will be sold too!  Wrap up your holiday shopping in one stop.  The Intimate Affair will be held at Spa 34 on 34th Street in NYC from 10am-3pm and will feature Spa Specials including a Mani/Pedi for only $22 (reg. $34.) and a ½ Hour Full Body Massage for only $30 (reg. $40.)  Come in from the cold and shop for Holiday Gifts up to 50% off and indulge yourself with a Spa treatment!  Be sure to RSVP at www.festivetrunkshow1.eventbrite.com.  Guests can expect refreshments and gifts with purchase.

The Intimate Apparel Square Club’s Holiday Party is being held on December 13, 2012.  This year, Santa will be visiting the “Rusk Kids” one-on-one in their rooms while the new RUSK facility is being built.  But members and guests are welcome to join us for dinner at Trattoria Alba on 34th Street, NYC at 6pm.  The Intimate Affair includes presentation of the prestigious Al Jaffin Award to Diane Paccione as well as presentation of the 2012 H.U.G. Award Gala proceeds to the administrators and doctors at NYU Langone Medical Center’s Rusk Rehabilitation Center and Tisch Hospital.  Members and their families: $70; Guests: $80 (Dinner and Open Bar.)

On December 18, 2012, The Lingerie Alliance presents A Festive Affair Holiday Networking Social at Legends Loft Lounge, 6 West 33rd Street between 5th Ave & 6th Ave from 6:30-8:30pm.  Two hours open bar, giveaways & gift bags, an Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest and more.  The primary sponsor of the Festive Affair is LELO, the world’s leading designer brand for intimate lifestyle products.  LELO is donating Prize Baskets for winners of the Ugly Sweater Contest with the Grand Prize Basket valued at $1000!  This event costs $35/ per person and is limited to 60 people.  RSVP and purchase your tickets before they sell out: www.festiveaffair1.eventbrite.com

Intimate Affair: Intimates Industry Businesses Collaborate to Support Go Naked and Check Yourself Cancer Awareness Event and Fundraiser

27 Nov

On Sunday, November 18, 2012, intimates industry businesses including the professional organization for intimate apparel professionals, The Lingerie Alliance, and the world’s leading designer brand for intimate lifestyle products, LELO, joined lingerie store owner and buyer, Angie Courtney of Sweetest Sin in Red Bank, N.J. to support Go Naked and Check Yourself, the 2nd annual cancer awareness event dedicated to raising funds and bringing awareness / prevention to detectible cancers where you can go naked and check yourself – skin, breast and testicular cancers.

Angie Courtney, owner Sweetest Sin

The unique, sold-out “Intimate Affair” which was hosted by Angie Courtney of Sweetest Sin and Chris Paseka from the downtown Red Bank specialty bakery, Sugarush, was held at TEAK Restaurant and was sponsored by over 50 area businesses.  Although the event encourages guests to “get naked,” there was no nudity at the event.  However, lingerie-clad female models and male models wearing name-brand boxers and briefs amused guests while they sold raffle tickets throughout the affair.  In addition to the raffle, the event featured a silent auction including gifts worth thousands of dollars.  Cancer survivor and motivational speaker DonnaLyn Giegerich kicked off the event by promoting the event’s theme – go naked and check yourself.  And, every guest left the event with an education and a Gift Bag including products, samples, discount cards/ coupons, certificates and more from area businesses and the intimates industry event sponsors, The Lingerie Alliance and LELO.

“There were already a ton of local fundraisers that are more formal, like galas. We’ve been to a lot of them, and we will continue supporting them because they do a great job at raising awareness,” Paseka said. “But we wanted to host something that was a little more funky and quirky.”

More than $10,000 was raised at the event with 100% of the proceeds being donated to four charities – the American Cancer Society, Livestrong, the Young Survival Coalition, and the newly formed Red Bank-based storm relief non-profit organization, RebuildRecover.  The areas surrounding Red Bank, N.J. were hard hit during Hurricane Sandy and recovery efforts have only just begun.

“Raising money for cancer awareness is still our primary goal, and cancer will still be there when the recovery from Hurricane Sandy is complete,” Paseka said. “But we felt that it was our responsibility to also help address the more immediate needs of our community in some way this year.”

Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

14 Nov

As I think back on the past few weeks, I am inspired by mankind.  I have seen people from all walks of life coming together to support those who have literally lost everything as a result of Hurricane Sandy.  It brought people together who would not normally mix.  Barriers of race, creed, sexual orientation and socio-economic differences have been broken.  Here in Jersey City, we have witnessed great loss.  Many of my neighbors are still without power after two long, cold, dark weeks.  Life as we know it has been changed forever.  Insurance pay-outs and FEMA funds cannot restore one’s wellbeing.  Luckily, I was one of the first to have power restored here in Jersey City. I opened my doors to everyone & anyone that needed some warmth, a hot shower, a phone charge, or a hot meal.  But it was only a temporary “fix.”

Sea Bright, NJ. Photo by Mark Vetrini

Most of my family is “down the shore” where entire towns have been literally wiped out.  My sister, Eileen Rafferty, hopped in her car and ventured into some of the hardest hit neighborhoods in Jersey such as Belford and Keyport.  She knocked on doors to pitch in with clean-up efforts and to find out what they really need.  After a day on the “front line,” Eileen called me and said “We need undies!”  I jumped on the horn and within a matter of hours, I was able to collect cases of Clean/Unworn Underwear from manufacturers and designers around the Country.  Out of this need, the #SpareAPair Campaign has been born.  Organizations such as Bra Recyclers and Support1000 have been accepting donations of gently worn bras for years.  These organizations get the bras directly into the hands of the women in need (around the world.)  But what about skivvies?  My mom always told me, “Never leave the house without clean underwear!”  But after a disaster, that’s not so easy, is it?  Can You #SpareAPair of Underwear?  Contact me directly to find out how you can support the #SpareAPair Campaign.

Christian Siriano and Jene Luciani

The Intimate Apparel Square Club’s 57th Annual H.U.G. Awards Gala was held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012.  This year’s Intimate Affair (called “An Enchanted Evening”) honored LuAnn Via, former President and CEO of Payless ShoeSource, Inc. as well as Steven Chernoff, chairman of Rago Foundations, LLC.  Intimate apparel industry veteran Janet Peters was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to the Club.  The annual event raises funds to support NYU Langone Medical Center’s RUSK Institute and Tisch Hospital.  Despite the wintry weather, members and supporters of the Club gathered together at 230 Fifth Penthouse to celebrate the humanitarian achievements of our honorees and to support the “RUSK Kids.”  The event’s emcee was celebrity stylist and author of The Bra Book, Jené Luciani.  Luciani wore a gown designed by Project Runway star, designer Christian Siriano.  Siriano attended the event and presented his friend LuAnn Via with her H.U.G. Award.  Via was also dressed in Christian Siriano from head to toe.  Siriano arrived at the event with his guest, movie star Isabelle Fuhrman who also donned his designs!  The event raised thousands of dollars which will be donated directly to NYU Langone Medical Center’s RUSK Institute and Tisch Hospital.  The IASC is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization and none of its members are paid.

Dear Kate, the young fashion-meets-function lingerie line, is set to launch online this month followed by availability in specialty boutiques across the U.S.  The debut collection—an assortment ranging from elegant high-rises and cream bodysuits to pastel bikinis and basic hipsters—pays homage to what every woman loves about her favorite intimates.  While the designs alone catch the eye, it’s what’s underneath that has Dear Kate poised to make its mark with not only fashionistas, but also new and expecting mothers.  Julie Sygiel, founder and CEO of Dear Kate says, “The risk of an oops moment shouldn’t mean we have to give up what we feel good in.”  Below the beauty of every Dear Kate panty is a light-as-a-feather lining that protects women against stains and spills with the utmost discretion.  Delicate to the touch and known for their easy wear-and-wash quality, the panties have already garnered a cult following through an earlier line in 2011.  Originally named Sexy Period, the patent-pending high-tech underwear was geared towards women who wanted extra backup during their period without having to compromise on style.  But when Sexy Period saw preteens, new moms experiencing incontinence, and even athletes embrace their panties, they knew a rebranding was in order.  Known briefly as Underbrella before a trademark issue delayed a re-launch this summer, the team behind Dear Kate is pleased with the early praise they’ve already received.  “Kate is that best friend in a crisis, the one who rushes to your side with chocolate,” says Sygiel, on the line’s new name.  “The women who wear our panties appreciate not only the innovation behind it, but also the community we’ve become, and Dear Kate embraces that fully.”

This Wednesday, November 14th, luxury brand Fleur du Mal is celebrating its launch by hosting an Intimate Affair featuring Parisian DJ Inez Melia and renowned Mixologist Xavier Herit.  Fleur du Mal is a signature collection of ready-to-wear and lingerie by Jennifer Zuccarini.  The designs will be sold exclusively through a uniquely interactive e-commerce site- www.fleurdumal.com.

The Lingerie Alliance is proud to be participating in another fundraiser on November 18th at Teak Restaurant, in Red Bank, New Jersey.  The Intimate Affair, GO NAKED AND CHECK YOURSELF, is an evening dedicated to bringing awareness / prevention to detectible cancers where you can go naked and check yourself – skin, breast and testicular cancers.  The event is presented by Sugarush (a specialty bakery in Red Bank, NJ) and the award-winning lingerie boutique, Sweetest Sin.  The mission of Go Naked and Check Yourself is to take the stigma of embarrassment out of checking yourself, because early detection can prevent long term issues.  All proceeds from the event benefit charities such as The American Cancer Society.  And since the areas surrounding Red Bank, NJ were so badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy, 25% of all proceeds will now benefit MOVE FOR HUNGER.  Contact me for tickets or to make a donation.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming Intimate Affairs:

December 4, 2012 – The Underfashion Club’s Holiday Party at The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park South.

December 13, 2012- The Intimate Apparel Square Club’s Holiday Party at the RUSK Institute followed by a Dinner at Trattoria Alba.

December 18, 2012- The Lingerie Alliance presents a Festive Affair Holiday Networking Social at Legends Loft Lounge, 6 West 33rd Street between 5th Ave & 6th Ave, 6:30-8:30pm.  Two hours open bar, giveaways & gift bags, an Ugly Sweater Contest and more.  $35/ per person.

Intimate Affair: ClosetDash Shop and Leading Full-Bust Blog Hourglassy to Sponsor Busty Clothing Swap

16 Oct

ClosetDash Shop and the leading blog for full-busted women, Hourglassy are excited to sponsor the first event of its kind, a Busty Clothing Swap from 11am-2pm on Saturday, October 20th, for women who wear dress sizes 2-16 and bra cups D and higher, at ClosetDash Shop’s new space on the fourth floor of 30 E. 20th Street in Manhattan, NYC.

“Forty women with similar body types in the same room means everyone should be able to find something she loves that fits,” says Darlene Campbell, founder of the full-busted clothing line Campbell & Kate and creator of the blog Hourglassy.  “We also have amazing raffle and gift bag items from some of the best full-bust brands out there.”  In addition, Bottomless Closet will be in attendance to accept donations of clothing.

Finding clothing that fits is a perpetual challenge for women with small backs (a 28-36 bra band) who wear D cups and higher.  Campbell began her blog in 2008 to help full-busted women discover the lingerie and clothing lines that cater specifically to them.  When she blogged about attending ClosetDash Shop’s first swap in May, she realized there was enough interest for a large-bust-specific swap.

It was only a matter of time before ClosetDash Shop’s founder, Jennifer Lee, approached her about co-sponsoring such an event.  “There’s potential for more body-specific swaps in the future,” says Lee.  “Swaps already have a fun sense of community, but imagine the shared laughter in a room full of tall women, or women with large hips, or really petite women?”

Participants will be charged a $10 admission fee and should bring up to ten items of clothing in sizes 2-16. Advanced registration is recommended, at www.cdsbustyswap.eventbrite.com.

Intimate Affair: Lavette Slater to Donate a Glam Makeover to Breast Cancer Survivor Susan Blinken at PinkChoseMe Foundation’s BRA Day USA Celebration

15 Oct

Tiffany Jones

The breast cancer awareness organization PinkChoseMe Foundation is hosting BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AWARENESS (BRA) Day USA 2012, an awareness and fundraising celebration, on October 17th, 2012.  Tiffany Jones, Founder and President of PinkChoseMe Foundation, is working with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgery Foundation to bring BRA Day USA 2012 to New York City for the very first time.  The event is sponsored by the Breast and Plastic Surgeons at the Weill Cornell Breast Center in NYC.  This unique awareness and fundraising event is being held at the upscale Martin Lawrence Gallery in New York’s famed downtown neighborhood, SoHo.  The event is expected to attract numerous celebrities and other notable / prominent, world-renowned individuals to support this important cause.

Lavette Slater

With style and grace, 3x Emmy Award Winning Hair and Makeup Stylist,  Lavette Slater conveys a vivid quality through her skilled eye and hands when she is with each and every client.  With over 15 years as a celebrity hairstylist and beauty expert; Lavette Slater is known as a trendsetter in the hair and makeup industry.  Contributing along with the PinkChoseMe Foundation for Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA 2012,  Lavette Slater will be donating her stylish services to Breast Cancer survivor, Susan Blinken.  Susan will be getting a glam makeover by the hands of a beauty master and her glamorous look will be revealed at the end of the night.  Breast Cancer affects the mind, body, and soul of a woman.  What better way than to acknowledge the beauty of a woman after conquering this deadly disease.

This year nearly 227,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  Research has found that nearly 7 out of 10 women are unaware of their breast reconstruction options at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis, a number that is more pronounced among minority and uninsured women.

These numbers exist in spite of federal and state laws that require health insurers (including Medicaid and Medicare) to cover breast reconstruction procedures along with a number of state laws promoting a team approach to breast cancer that ensure a plastic surgeon is consulted prior to surgical mastectomy.

PinkChoseMe is committed to closing this loop.  It is in that vein that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in collaboration with The Plastic Surgery Foundation launched a two year public awareness campaign that seeks to increase the number of women who are informed of their surgical reconstruction options at the time of their diagnosis and prior to mastectomy.

The campaign strategy integrates media, industry, marketing, public relations, celebrity endorsement and meaningful research to raise awareness and educate the public about the options available post-mastectomy.

PinkChoseMe stands as a partner in this effort and is organizing the awareness and fundraising event at the Martin Lawrence Gallery.  Money raised from the event will be donated to the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund of The PSF (a 501c (3) organization.) The restricted fund is purposed with increasing public awareness among women about their breast reconstruction options, funding charity care for uninsured women seeking breast reconstruction and researching surgical breast reconstruction.

BRA Day USA has partnered with MobileCause to facilitate the fundraising process.  Individuals and companies are welcome to make donations to support this cause by texting PINK and the dollar amount of their contribution to # 71777.  All donations will benefit The PSF BRA Fund (less transaction fees.)

This celebratory event which is intended to be uplifting and spirited caps a day filled with events throughout the country and in New York, which are dedicated to “closing the loop.”  This festive affair will include pink bubbly (courtesy of leading Italian winemaker MARTINI®) and light fare, VIP gift bags, music, silent auctions and dedicated art exhibits.  In addition, special honored guests will be presented with awards for their dedication and commitment to PinkChoseMe Foundation and the first ever BRA Day USA.

Inc. reminds everyone to ENJOY Responsibly.

Additional sponsors, contributors and participants of the event include The Plastic Surgery Foundation, the well-known Martin Lawrence Gallery, the leading online retailer of men’s and women’s underwear and intimates Freshpair.com, luxury beauty and lingerie brand Naked Princess, floral design company Only Roses, beauty brand Benefit Cosmetics, Young Professionals United for Change, Michael Steele Photography, full-service design house Fred Gates Design, apparel brand Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti and the professional organization for intimate apparel professionals, The Lingerie Alliance.

You’re Invited: Feel Your Boobies! I’m Doing It….Are You?

11 Apr

The first ever Feel Your Boobies® Flash Mob is coming to Union Square, NYC on April 12th from 12:00pm-2:00pm with plans to create the longest bra chain in history to remind young women about the importance of proactive breast health.  Bring your old bras (gently used) on Thursday or mail them to: Feel Your Boobies, Attn: Jenny Blessenko, 1140 Broadway Ste # 1007, NY, NY 10001.  All bras will be donated to charity following the event.

The Feel Your Boobies Foundation was founded in 2004 after Leigh Hurst was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33.  She found her lump simply by “feeling her boobies,” not through a formal “breast self-exam.”  The lump was unnoticed by doctors and she has no family history of the disease.  She designed a few fun t-shirts to remind her friends about something that saved her life and it has since evolved into a non-profit Foundation and international campaign focused on using unconventional and unexpected methods to reach young women with the provocative reminder “Feel Your Boobies. Are You Doing It?”  To learn more about the “Are You Doing It?”® Reminder Campaign, and to read testimonials, go to FeelYourBoobies.com.

Each year nearly 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 5% of them are under the age of 40.  Knowing your body (feeling your boobies) is one of the primary ways that breast lumps or other changes can be detected.  Since mammograms are generally not recommended until the age of 40, breast awareness is sometimes the only line of defense in finding a lump early.

Join me and other Bra La Mode readers on Thursday afternoon at Union Square Park in NYC to show our support by “Feeling Our Boobies!”  I’m Doing It!  Are You?  And don’t forget to bring your new or gently used bras for donation!
