Intimate Insight: Crème Bralée Lingerie Launches “Pin It To Win It” Valentine’s Day Contest

Intimate Insight: Curvy Couture — Beautiful Bras For the Full Figured Woman

One of the most intimidating aspects of purchasing a bra online is the fear that it will not fit.  However, Dora has done away with this fear by offering a unique feature called Pick 2 on Curvy Couture’s e-commerce site that allows women to choose two bras to test for size and fit.  The bra that does not work is simply returned.

Currently Curvy Couture offers styles in C-DD cup sizes, but Dora plans on expanding the size range to include F, G, and H cups in spring 2013.  Other endeavors for the brand include producing a line of sports bras that are easy to put on without causing a heart attack to take off as well as a line of light shapewear that is easy to wear and provides sculpture for curves.

It will certainly be exciting to see how the brand develops throughout this coming year and beyond.  The lingerie industry could definitely use more entrepreneurs like Dora who realize that full figured women want to celebrate their curves and not hide them.

Intimate Affair: Bare Necessitie​s’ Live Bra Fit Webcast

BN_FitEventBare Necessities is hosting a LIVE fit event this Wednesday in New York City!  This will be fashion’s first LIVE webcast featuring bra fit experts, sexy models, real-time audience Q&A, and lots of special features (and a viewer-only secret deal).  This is a totally up-close and personal experience featuring Eveden bra fit expert, Freddy Zappe and Bare Necessities’ Erin McLaughlin!  Freddy and Erin will show women how to measure themselves properly, how to find the perfect fitting bra, and how to know the difference between a very good bra and an ill-fitting bra.

Freddy Zappe has conducted one-on-one fit sessions internationally for over 16 years, so viewers are in for a real treat during this live streaming video event. Intimate Insight: Bra La Mode’s Los Angeles Lingerie Tour

I’m in sunny southern California for a few days – for both business and pleasure.  While here, I had the pleasure of spending a lovely afternoon with boob and bra expert, Elisabeth Dale, author of bOObs- a Guide to your Girls and founder of The Breast Life.  We took a lingerie tour of Los Angeles and its environs beginning with the award-winning luxury lingerie boutique, Faire Frou Frou.

Faire Frou Frou is located on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City, Ca.  This lovely boutique evokes the nostalgia of old Hollywood glamour.  The mother-daughter team of Gail and Alison Rubke carefully curate a selection of the world’s finest lingerie which can be best described as elegant, ultra-feminine and sophisticated. 

I commend them for including independent, emerging designers and brands in their collection.  This tiny space is chock full of discoveries!  Just inside the front door is a table featuring the retro-inspired brand Dottie’s Delights which is designed and hand-made by Stephanie Kuhr in Chicago. 

For me, the highlight of Faire Frou Frou was the discovery of a new brand, Gold Hawk.  Gold Hawk is a local Los Angeles-based brand which includes silk camisoles, tunics and nightgowns.  And Alison made a point to show me how each of the Gold Hawk pieces can easily translate into “innerwear as outerwear.”  She commented, “Even the floor-length silk gown would look fabulous with a pair of boots and a chunky sweater.”  Thanks for the tip, Alison!  Every time I picked up a piece of lingerie that grabbed my attention, it carried the Gold Hawk label! I look forward to learning more about this elegant line. 

Just a few of the other brands carried at the store include Zinke, Cadolle, Naked Princess, Marlies Dekkers, Ari Dein, The Lake and Stars, Fortnight, Janine Robin, Claudette, Fleur of England, La Fee Verte, Skin, Araks, Else, Deborah Marquit and Result Wear Shapewear.  If you’re looking to embrace your inner Glamourpuss…. head to Faire Frou Frou! 

Next, Elisabeth and I ventured “over the hill” into Hollywood to visit Jenette Goldstein at Jenette Bras on Melrose.  This funky, retro boutique was opened by the spunky Jenette Goldstein in 2009 and caters to D Cups and Up.  Jenette says that full-breasted women are “overdeveloped and underserved.”  This bra fit salon specializes in quality bras from Europe including Prima Donna, Twist by Prima Donna, Marie Jo, Empreinte, Freya, Panache, Anita and Simone Perele among others. 

The boutique is a bit “off the beaten path,” but if you’re looking for a true bra fit salon, this is the place to go.  Jenette says that the women that walk into her store are on a mission… they are looking for a properly fitting bra which she says “is indispensable for a chesty gal!”  Clients come to Jenette Bras from all over because true bra fit stores are few and far between.  Jenette also carries a small selection of lingerie, slips and shapewear from brands including Samantha Chang, Lindsey Roscoe and my friends, the Dirty Dolls.  My favorite piece in the store is an under-the-bust shaping slip by Twist by Prima Donna.  This shapewear piece is functional and practical, yet sexy as all hell….  To quote Jenette, “You will rock that hourglass, honey!”

After having a bite to eat in a local watering hole, Elisabeth and I headed west on Melrose only to discover that the boutique What Katie Did is closed on Sundays!  This did not deter us from continuing our lingerie road trip.  Our last destination was the Addiction Nouvelle Lingerie boutique on Robertson in West Hollywood.  This minimalist, modern space caters to a young contemporary consumer and carries the brands Mimi Holliday, Valery, Damaris, Lise Charmel and Nina Ricci in addition to its namesake Addiction Nouvelle.  Each of these brands is well-constructed of high-quality fabrics such as silk, satin, microfiber, and exquisite European laces.  Styles include bras, panties, camisoles, bustiers, babydolls, chemises, full slips, loungewear, sleepwear and robes.  I fell in love with the Addiction Nouvelle high-waisted brief!

It was interesting to note that each of the stores we visited had its own unique identity.  I appreciated the selection in each of these stores and would highly recommend you pay a visit depending on your personal wants and desires.

Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

There’s a chill in the air…And I couldn’t be happier!  Before we know it, I’ll be donning my “uniform” of boots, button-downs and blazers.   Until then, I’m trying to enjoy the last bit of Summer.  I’m down the shore for a few days…attempting to get some much needed rest and relaxation in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, N.J.  I much prefer the beach during the “off season.”  The weather is still spectacular, yet it’s quiet and peaceful here.  I’ve taken walks on the beach, I’ve watched the sunrise at 6:30am, I’ve admired the adorable Victorian-style historic homes that line the streets in this neighborhood, I’ve had some of the best sea scallops I’ve ever tasted, I’ve wandered in and out of the boutiques around town….all by myself.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to cherish my time alone.  It’s been a delightful mini vacation!

While down here, I stopped in to see my friend Marla Wink at Indian Summer at Bay Village in Beach Haven.  I presented her with a challenge.  I was in the market for a new bra….  But I wanted something different.  I am such a creature of habit.  Nine times out of ten, I walk out of a bra boutique with the same styles I always wear.  So, I asked Marla to show me something new.  I walked into the store with an open mind and I let her run the show.  I told her what I typically wear and what I like and don’t like about the styles currently available to the full-busted consumer.  Over the years, I’ve become very loyal to the Eveden family of brands- Fantasie, Freya and Fauve.  So, when she suggested I try a Panache bra, I was a little hesitant.  But I promised myself to keep an open mind and I’m sure glad I did.  We scored!  I am in love with my new Panache Andorra Full Cup Bra.  We went up a cup to achieve the proper fit.  The lace is very soft yet powerful and I love the underbust/cradle construction.  The best part?  The color is a beautiful, rich teal color called Lagoon.  It’s perfect for Fall.  Great job, Marla!  You passed the test.  I hope the bra itself passes the test of time.  In addition, Marla had the Fantasie Rebecca bra in stock in color black.  This color is back-ordered in most of the stores in the tri-state area so I had to snag it while I could.  Lucky me!  I walked out of Indian Summer with two new bras to carry me through the end of the year.

Fashion’s Night Out was held on Thursday, September 6th.  I spent the evening with Bethenny Frankel at Macy’s Herald Square.  The Intimate Affair featured the Skinnygirl Smoothers n’ Shapers “Real Woman” Fashion Show.  It was great to see Bethenny’s fans on the runway modeling her shapewear line which is designed for every body.  They were so full of confidence!  The winners of Bethenny’s fashion show contest modeled the shapewear alone as well as styled into various looks which showed the guests how to wear this fashionable line that is meant to be seen.  It was an exciting event which was hosted and emcee’d by Bethenny herself.

My partner, Luis Paredes, and I attended Small Boutique Fashion Week on Saturday, September 8, 2012.  The SBFW2012 Fashion Show and Market is geared towards small business owners, emerging designers, and novelty designers that are looking to get their start by selling to small boutiques and unique shops.  We were pleased to see lingerie-inspired looks on the runway.  Several designers presented styles which were constructed of ultra fine and sheer fabrics which revealed the undergarments worn underneath.  In essence, the lingerie worn underneath became part of the total look.

The International Lingerie Show (ILS) was held September 10th through the 12th at the RIO in Las Vegas.  The ILS trade show leans towards the sexy/adult side of our industry.  Luis Paredes of The Lingerie Journal attended the trade show and has posted numerous articles and images of the show on www.TheLingerieJournal.com and on The Lingerie Journal Facebook page.

To celebrate the end of Fashion Week, The Lingerie Alliance hosted the official Nolcha Fashion Week Closing Party in collaboration with Label 55 on Thursday, September 13, 2012.  Nolcha Fashion Week is an award-winning event for independent fashion designers to showcase their collections to a global audience of press, retailers, stylists and industry influencers.  My partner, Luis Paredes, and I were very pleased to be partnered with Label 55 and Nolcha Fashion Week as they share our passion for supporting independent brands.

On Thursday, September 27th, Linda’s in Murray Hill is hosting a Simone Perele Trunk Show from 10am until 9pm.  Guests will have the opportunity to view the entire Fall 2012 collection and preview the Spring 2013 collection in store.  Linda is offering 10% off all Simone Perele purchases on the 27th (including pre-orders of the Spring 13 styles) plus each guest will receive a Free Gift with purchase.  After 6pm, Linda’s will be turned into a “Parisian Paradise” replete with Parisian treats and cocktails.  Oooo La La!

Also on September 27th, Sweetest Sin in Red Bank, New Jersey will be celebrating her third anniversary!  The party starts in the boutique at 5pm and includes free professional bra fittings, exclusive specials, 10% off all purchases, pink bubbly and light snacks.  Then… as if that wasn’t enough…. Guests are invited to join Angie Courtney, owner of Sweetest Sin, for an “after party” at Taste Lounge in the Red Bank Galleria.  If you bring your receipt from Sweetest Sin Boutique, you are treated to a free cocktail.  The Intimate Affair will feature live music, a Trunk Show showcasing the high-end lingerie and beauty brand Naked Princess, Gift Bags (including items from our favorite luxury brand, Naked Princess,) Raffle Prizes including an exclusive Gift Basket filled with steamy goodies and a Gift Card valued at $200 from Sweetest Sin!  As I’ve mentioned before, Angie Courtney is a true partner in her community and gives back in every way she can.  At this Intimate Affair, all proceeds from the Raffles and 20% of the proceeds from Taste Lounge will be donated to The Semper Fi Fund.  Also, Angie is gearing up for the ING New York City Marathon where she will be running on behalf of the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.  And, Angie is already making plans for the annual “Go Naked and Check Yourself” fundraiser in mid November which raises awareness of detectable cancers including breast cancer, skin cancer and testicular cancer.  More details to follow!

Intimate Insiders, Intimate Affairs and Upcoming Events

Last week was a helluva week for me.  I was supposed to fly to Milwaukee for an appointment on Tuesday- in and out in one day.  However, due to flight delays and cancelled flights, I ended up stuck in Milwaukee through Thursday (why couldn’t I get stuck in a city like Paris or Rome???)  After finally returning to the East Coast, I decided I needed a little R&R.  I went down the shore to spend a few days with my parents who live in Barnegat, NJ (just inland from Long Beach Island.)  Quality time with family never fails to cure the effects of the “woe is me” syndrome.

Of course, even while on vacation, I inevitably find myself drawn to the closest lingerie boutiques.  This time, it was Indian Summer in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, NJ.  The owner, Marla Wink, is quite proud of her assortment…and she should be!  Who would think a bustling beach town with very few year-round residents would need a bra shop?  Before entering, I assumed she would only be carrying casual lingerie that caters to the tourists that browse the myriad shops along Bay Avenue looking to score an LBI logo sweatshirt or a pair of flip-flops.  Nonetheless, I was dead wrong!  Indian Summer has a wide assortment of bras from 28-48 band and from AA to K cup.  She carries quality brands such as Wacoal, Chantelle, Eveden brands Fantasie, Freya and Elomi, Panache and Harlequin, and newcomer Curvy Kate.  A full-busted gal like me was in bra heaven.  In addition, she has cozy PJ sets and robes from the likes of PJ Salvage and luxurious lingerie from brands such as In Bloom and Jonquil.  The best part?  Bra-sized swimwear from Freya, Fantasie, Huit, Panache and Anita among others.  It was definitely worth the trip!

This Tuesday, August 21st, CLO Intimo is hosting a Summer Sample Sale at the Archstone in Murray Hill from 5-10pm.  Sip champagne and nibble on strawberries while browsing the last of the CLO Summer styles as well as the unique jewelry designs of Rebecka Froberg.

Hey there lingerie lovers!  I apologize for not keeping up with the column these past few weeks….  My personal life got in the way of my lingerie life (yes, believe it or not, I have other aspects of my life besides bras & panties!)  Nonetheless, I’m back at it and excited to report on the latest happenings in the world of lingerie.  Here are a few Intimate Insights for the Week….

Corsetry expert Angela Friedman held an Intimate Affair including a presentation of her debut intimate apparel collection, the Versailles Collection, on Saturday, June 2nd at Gallery MC on 52nd Street, NYC.  Angela has been developing her line for over five years, all while running the ladies’ department at The New York City Ballet Costume Shop, building costumes for the Glimmerglass Opera and the American Players’ Theatre and making dresses for everyone’s favorite vocalist, Adele.  The vintage-inspired designs infuse an aristocratic flair with muted dusty hues to achieve a collection that evokes beauty, elegance, romance and pure indulgence!  The collection includes real steel-boned corsets, lacy and frilly bras and panties, bias cut slips and robes, accessories and garters.  Check out this emerging brand which is designed and manufactured right here in NYC!

On Tuesday June 5th, I co-hosted an Intimate Affair – a Fall & Winter 2012 Press Preview with the US distribution company, Revival Brands.  The event featured the coming collection of the luxury, Italian hosiery brand Philippe Matignon.  Well-known all over Europe, Philippe Matignon’s high-end hosiery was introduced to the States last year and is already a favorite among nationally recognized designers, celebrities, and stylists.  The event was a tremendous success.  We introduced the brand to hosiery buyers from prominent retailers including Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and BareNecessities.com as well as to editors and writers from various media platforms and publications.  It was a real honor to have been invited to be the intimate apparel expert and brand’s ambassador for the evening.  It’s a brand I’m really passionate about.  Take a look at their selection at www.PeekBrooklyn.com or on their own site www.philippematignon.us.

On Wednesday June 6th, I had the privilege of attending the runway show for swimwear designer Caitlyn Kelly’s debut collection.  The event was held on the rooftop of 2 Gold Street in the financial district.  Her swimwear collection is daring and bold, elegant and sophisticated.  Definitely keep your eye on Caitlyn Kelly!

Attention Lingerie Designers!  The next edition of the Lingerie Journal Designer Showcase is opening its doors this summer.  They had an incredibly successful show this past February with 10 independent designers showing their lines and a sold out Brand Affair Seminar and Lingerie Exhibition that drew in close to 200 guests including buyers, lingerie retail store owners, independent lingerie designers, wholesale manufacturers, influential lingerie bloggers, and other intimate apparel professionals.  Designers interested in exhibiting at this summer’s show should contact info@lingeriedesignershowcase.com to request an application. One more thought for the week…  Has anyone checked out True & Co.?  The long awaited website which claims to solve our bra fit problems with a proprietary online fit process (sans measuring tape) has finally launched.  Any thoughts?  I’d love to hear what you think.  Is this the answer?  I filled out the “simple quiz” and, unfortunately, they had no bras for me.  No surprise….

Happy May Intimate Insiders!  The first week of May is Market Week for wholesale manufacturers in the Intimate Apparel industry.  Buyers from major retailers come into New York from around the country to get a look at the latest collections.  Most Buyers are finalizing their assortments for Fall & Holiday 2012 and previewing Spring 2013 collections.  Best of luck to everyone showing this Market.

During Market, the Intimate Apparel Council is holding “Retail Mobile Engagement” on Wednesday, May 2nd at the Union League Club, a panel discussion on mobile marketing. The panel will explain the different types of action codes, how to develop companion apps for iphone and andrioid platforms, and how a mobile engagement campaign can improve your business. The discussion will also include how to improve communication within your company using mobile devises. Featured Speakers include Leslie Burke, Director of Interactive Print at Conde Nast, John Puterbaugh, Ph.D, CEO & Founder at Nellymoser, Inc., and Liz Smith, Vice President of Marketing at Wacoal America, Inc.  The Intimate Apparel Council is a division of the American Apparel and Footwear Association.

The Lingerie Goddess, Margaret Shrum, is showcasing several NY-based Lingerie Designers at the “Shop for Kids” Spring Shopping Soiree on Tuesday, May 1st from 6-8pm at the Doncaster Fashion Showroom at 145 West 57th Street, 20th Floor (between 6th & 7th Aves.)  Margaret will be accompanied by Alexis Chasman who will be offering her Spring Accessories Collection.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Change for Kids.  Join the Intimate Affair, have a glass of wine and indulge in affordable luxury!

My bosom buddy Jene Luciani taped a “bra makeover” segment for Wendy Williams on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 and I was asked to model the Curvy Kate “Princess” Bra on the show!  Check out the Video on YouTube.  You’ll get a kick out of it.  Just for the record, I was not pulled from the studio audience….  And no, I don’t really walk around sporting a bad case of the dreaded “quadra-boob!”  Taping this segment was a blast.  Technically speaking, I like to think I am the very first Curvy Kate USA Star in a Bra model!  My friend Erin McLaughlin from Bare Necessities joined us at The Wendy Williams Studio on Wednesday and was a lifesaver….  She helped to get me scooped, swooped and lifted into my Curvy Kate!  Bare Necessities provided vouchers to all of the audience members to redeem for the products featured on the segment!

ILOVEAGOOD hosted the store opening party for Bradelis New York on Thursday, April 26, 2012 in Nolita, NYC.  Guests of the exclusive Intimate Affair were offered bra fittings courtesy of the Bradelis bra fitters.  The Japanese fit technique of Bradelis is quite unique as compared to traditional U.S. methods.  I highly encourage you to visit one of Bradelis New York’s three locations to experience it for yourself.  Guests at the event included Luis Paredes, publisher of The Lingerie Journal, Krista Purnell of The Lingerie Post, “The Lingerie Godess” Margaret Shrum, Melissa Franchi of Nevaeh Intimates, Laura Mehlinger of Lola Haze Lingerie, Christi Reid of Journelle, among others.
